I think there is a correlation between quality of defence and missed tackles, many of the top missed tacklers e.g. Sammut, Chase and Dureau have questionnable defence, but ATEOTD it doesn't matter if a half isn't a great tackler. When signing Ellis, I doubt the club went.. Ok so he can pass, kick and score tries for fun but how can he defend?'"
Nor did i claim that Ellis needs to be a great tackler. I claimed he needs to improve his defence.
I don't doubt for one second that the club looked at a potential new signings defensive qualities before offering a contract, considering its one of the vital skills needed to play the game at any level.

absolute tosh, what if a players creative and kicking ability i.e,dobson might be worth about 12pts a game to the dobbins as opposed to his defensive frailties costing them a try every third game or so,you do the math

| Wasn't overly impressed by his passing last night but in his defence they were under pressure all night from a very well drilled sheffield side and he was playing behind a beaten pack.

Totally, took a few wrong options on the last tackle too but even so with fulltime training and under a decent coach still think he could be a very astute signing.

| Could have a Danny Brough like impact on the club. Remember that he came from the NLs with not much expectation and ended up kicking us to a CCF win in Cardiff.
HOPEFULLY Ellis can do the same

what, smoke and drink and cause a general malaise in the squad, I hope he doesn't have the Brough FC effect.
I hope Ellis has grown up a bit quicker than Brough did.

Now you're basing your argument that on him creating 12 points a game, and only giving away one try every third game.
I could easily say he creates 4 points a game but misses 3 vital tackles costing 12 points a game. You do the math.

He did OK overall but I certainly wouldn't hold up his performances as anything for Ellis to aspire to. And he certainly didn't 'kick us to a CCF win' in anything but the literal sense of landing the last goal kick.
He's a far better player now than he ever was for us.

I thought he played a massive part in our final performance. Most certainly one of the best players on the pitch IMO.
Considering he wasn't meant to play such a big part in the season so early, the fact that he broke onto the scene and knocked someone out of the starting lineup against expectations is something I'd suggest as worth aspiring to in a first season for Ellis. Played awesome in the play-off game against Wire as well and one of Kear's biggest mistakes was dropping him for that what's-his-face journeyman the week after.
And obviously he's going to be a better player now (nearly 5 years after leaving us at a young age and with heaps of potential) than he was then. Would love to see him back at Hull.

Disagree with all that TBH.
I sometimes think I lived through a parallel timeline while Brough was here as history seems to get re-written on a regular basis. He gets better the further away from his performances we move.

His kicking was a massive reason we won the semi. He was underrated at Hull. Fans never gave him time and I fear the same with Ellis.

His kicking contributed a lot but wasn't the main factor IMO. And I disagree about him being underrated - the opposite was true if anything.
He would have been given plenty of time if he'd got his head together and not stormed out of the club in a sulk because he was asked to behave by the new coach.

I think you did as well. No-one has said he was the main factor, but he was a big factor. He contributed a lot through his kicking game (something we didn't have much of previously and don't now). He was a solid tackler unlike other halfbacks and has pace.
I don't disagree about him having a paddy. But he most certainly wasn't overrated. If anything the opposite. Getting dropped for the playoff game after having a stormer against Johns' Warrington suggests that. Just because he was a bad boy doesn't mean he was now crap.

brough was a young bit part player in 2005. Everything went through cooke and horne and brough's biggest contribution was his kicking

Our kicking game was actually pretty good when Cooke was in the side. Brough hardly played in the halves and didn't show the pace he has now, largely because he was unfit. In 2005 just about everything went through Cooke and Horne - check the stats if you don't believe me. While he was with us his major assets were his tackling and his kicking.
And I've never said he was crap, so not sure what point you were trying to make there.

| Brough looks quicker than Ellis to me in a "nippier" sense . Ellis is quite big and needs a good pre season which hopefully he will get under the new regime. Will help his mobility which would be my only concern with him.I hope/am sure he will get his chance to show us what he can do next season but don't see him as first choice half in February.

I like Ellis's pass and kicking game tbh....Horney could be classed as more mobile but his step is so predictable, he only seems to do the inside ball and all he offers in the kicking department is the short kick! If Ellis has a good pre-season and can make the step up I actually think he will offer more than Horney, so if we do not sign a quality 6 I would like to see Ellis more or less from Feb.
