| Greenhill was like McMenemy; you didn't realise what he did until he wasn't there. Contribution for every minute they were on the pitch was enormous.

| Well here is another hooker to think on Ray Owen only here one season but as hard as nails.
When Bradford had a good pack with Ramshaw and Clawson in second row he terorised them after some one hit him in the scrum.

| Greenhill was a solid prop and hard as nails! Cant remeber who he flattened once... Im sure it was a Saints player, and then another saints player broke their arm in a tackle against him.
Stephen Kearney had the biggest influence on the club I'm sure. Brought an unseen level of professionalism to our club in all aspects.

Greenhill wasnt the best player but worked hard and other teams forwards were afraid of him. He was a right head the ball but did a very good job in a well assembled team.
One player who has been mentioned a few times and i fail to see why is Cleal. He was at the end of his career and very average 99% of the time but on occasion would go on a mad crazy run flattening people in his path. Reminds me of a current FC forward actually.

| - and the other point about mentioning Greenhill is that this thread started as a theoretical team of overseas Hull players and prop is a position where we have probably recruited few such players - he's not got a lot of competition. I probably wouldn't rate many of them (except O'Meley) if they were competing with the likes of Mick Harrison, Karl Harrison, Lee Crooks and Trevor Skerrett (different eras I know but this is theoretical) or if they were competing with other teams' overseas props such as Mark Broadhurst.

Most underated overseas signing (and one I haven't seen mentioned yet, rather surprisingly) is Craig Coleman (1988-89). Brought over by Brian Smith, he struck up an instant and highly effective partnership with Gary Pearce which was instrumental in turning a dysfunctional bottom four side into a highly organized and disciplined top four side with a fantastic work ethic throughout the side. A team that punched above its collective weight with Coleman pulling the strings in the middle.'"
I remember the night when Coleman and Pearce systematically dismantled the worlds best team at Central park during that season . Great night.

Fantastic night of [ireal[/i mixed emotions. My mates father had past away and he'd been to his funeral during the day; very quiet on the way there, we couldn't shut him up on the way home.

Such was his standing in the game and the impact he had at Hull in a short space of time.
Back then I seem to remember most overseas players missing chunks of the season because the of the overlap between the English and Oz leagues. It would often be late September before a star signing turned up and in some cases they left before the seasons end! Didnt we fly Scott Gale back from his Oz club to play in our 88 cup semi final?

| Tbf at that time Sterling was the best half back the worlds seen, so can appreciate the impact.
Did gale have two spells with us then?

Yes he signed for the 87/88 season but suffered with injuries (not just a modern day problem for Hull ) and returned around 1992 for a season.

Didnt see much of him at all due to injury (think it was his shoulder that was the problem).
At the time I think it is fair to say we struggled with flair and pace out in the backs and Scott Gale was meant to bring just that. With the glory years behind us it wasnt the best of years on the pitch and the rugby was hardly entertaining.
It wasnt until Brian Smith got hold of us in 1988 that a decent side came together though we still had no real pace or flair in the backs but always a pretty tough pack and some decent half backs!
