| I think after tonight there will be a few fans who may reply to this topic, walking away from the HJ tonight was one of the most awful experiences of my life, not just in rugby league but in my life.
Walking past the pub opposite central station (cannot remember the name) where about 20 Wigan fans, mixed sex and mix race before anyone says anything. We got marched away towards he town centre, about 10 Wire fans decided that they would make the situation heated. I foolishly decided to be peace maker between the rival fans only for one Wire fan to run at me and "stick the nut on me".
He didnt just stop at that, after head butting me he then carried on and punched my girlfriend in the face (looks like a broken nose) I have never ever been so shocked in my life, after trying to re gain my sences i pulled everyone away and attempted to head towards the train station.
The police are involved, the warrington club have admitted that they have a huge issue with fans causing problems.
This will be taken further, anyone who decided to hit a woman should expect what is coming.....I will report more after speaking to the police again in the morning.

Well said. As terrible as what happened was and any true rugby league fan is appauled (Not to mention any normal human being), whether these idiots were wearing Warrington colours or not or went to the game or not, people cannot tar all Warrington fans with the same brush.
Warrington may have a larger element for trouble than other clubs (I wouldn't know), but apart from banning the people from the ground there is little more the club can do. This is a police issue.
I am sitting in warrington now talking to some of their fans and needless to say they are as appauled as we all are.
All the best Yicker and Hogan hope your recovering, don't let this small minority of B*astards get you down.

| Was an awful sight! Said before the game the test would be if we beat them esp when they had been on the beer all day Sat saw the worst come true! The ones who started it were def wire fans! Then every scrote come out of the pubs! I know Wire fans will be on saying they are nothing to do with us but you cant say we took 30thousand fans to Wembly then when some of the extra cause trouble say they are nowt to do with Wire!
Im not tarring all wire fans with the same but it was a disgrace!
The only thing that makes it worse is that no police were situated outside such an obvious potential for trouble!!

| I have had a call back from the Cheshire police after making a complaint on Saturday night about the lack of police presence in the obvious hotspot.
They explained that they review each game at the beginning of the year and look at previous years for guidance. As there hadn't been any trouble the last 2 years (which I disputed, I'm sure it was 2 years ago when the last incident happened in the same spot) then the didn't class it as a high risk game.
After this year's event they have ensured that certainly next year at least there will be a police presence outside said hotspot which I think is all we can ask for.
Forgot to mention he also said he'd be having a word with the licensee of the pub.

| I'm appauled as a wire fan.
There shouldn't need to be a police presence at any game, its only sport for gods sake. Rugby league is usually free of this kind of behaviour but clearly not on this occasion.
Sad that it's my home town we are talking about, but nothing suprises me in here anymore to be honest.

| The thread was locked before I had a chance to post so can I just say I hope you're both feeling a bit better and they get the guy who did it. Thanks for keeping us posted as this sort of thing affects ALL fans of ALL clubs.
Can I also add that you were gracious in your posts towards the genuine Warrington fans and that was good to see. Way too much 'tarring with the same brush' for my liking. The scrotes who did this are the lowest of the low, but it is no more to do with the genuine Wire fans than it would have been to do with me (or any other genuine Wigan fan) had a Wigan numpty carried out a similar attack.

| Truly terrible incident.
However im appalled at the title of this thread, please change it.
Until its proven otherwise then we must presume that the mindless berk who committed this appalling act is just a thug who frequents one of those boozers near central station. I think i remember reading that the culprit was in plain clothes and wore no rugby colours whatsoever.
All of the wire fans i have encountered would never dream of carrying out an unprovoked vicious attack like that. To label wire fans in a way that the thread title does is completely out of order and is as offensive as the act itself. I urge the moderators or admin team to amend the thread title asap.

| Alll clubs have a knob element, unfortunately our club(Wire) has more than most. It isn't big or clever, even if their is banter involved it is still unacceptable. Hopefully the club can do something about this. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Our own fans get grief at times in he ground as well from the younger, chavier element.

| As horrible and needless the violence was and I'm not condoning it in any way, shape or form, but these are not supporters of Warrington or part of the Rugby League family.
They are more likely to be mindless thugs who heard that Wigan were in town and decided to pop down hell bent on causing trouble.
If you refuse to come back to the HJ won't be a big loss to anyone but yourself. You enjoy going to watch the rugby so don't punish yourself by refusing to go back.
I apologise on behalf of all genuine Warrington fans but please don't tar people with the same bush.

having a word?????????????????
guys obviously been selling alcohol to people who have already had too much........and alcohol is the root cause imo.
this pub has a reputation for being "difficult" to pass on way to staion.
2008...glassing
2009 iirc..guy hit over head with a bottle
now the 2010 incidents...there were more than just Hogans incident. there was a fan set on fire FFS, and my lad told me he had been involved in a punch up near the same pub.
so why the F dont the police use their powers and close the pub down on wire matchdays, no matter who the opposition??
ok..so they might drink elsewhere , then congregate in that area...so why not a police escort for away fans from ground to station?????
and let the warrington club foot the bill???
thoughts anyone?

| I think the wire fans have a point, the title of this thread is a little damning, the fact that none of the d!ckheads appeared to be wire fans. But were more likely just hanging about waiting for someone to target.
Yes Warrington do seem to have a larger scale problem with idiot's compared to other clubs, but as were all aware 99% of the wire fans are decent people.
It's clear that from now on a police presence will be required, and while it's a good thing for all us fans it's also a little sad that we may be heading down a slippery slope.

| Many thanks for amending the thread title.
Lessons need to be learnt and action taken;
1. Higher level of highly visible policing especially at hotspot locations ie, the route to central station.
2. The licenses of the pubs opposite the station need to be reconsidered given the type of customers they attract.
3. Maybe away fans using the train stations should get a police escort to the stations.
4. Warrington RLFC and all other clubs need to take a firm stance against these thugs if they are indeed RL fans and attend the games.
Not being able to walk a few hundred yards safely from the hj stadium to a train station is a disgrace and warrington as a whole should be ashamed.

| There were about 30-40 involved in total, about 20 wires, most wearing shirts. I saw it kick off when about 10 wires ran across the street from the pub and started kicking Wiganers onto the ground. I got involved to stop a Wiganer getting his head kicked in off two lads in wire shirts, for my trouble I copped two kicks to the head. Three friends of mine were kicked in the head, one had his shirt ripped off his back and set on fire and his girlfriend was assaulted too. The rest of the details are a bit hazy until I was speaking to the police with Hogan and Dawn etc.

| I have been contacted by the Cheshire/Warrington police today, they have the incident on CCTV, i have given them the full description of the people who where involved and started the problems. They are hopeful that the CCTV will be clear enough. I will be doing everything i can to get these thugs prosecuted so nothing like this happens to anyone again.
I have also been in contact with Andy Ross who is the neighbourhood inspector for warrington Central regarding Policing future games. He is in charge of arranging the police for all Warrington home fixtures. He has promised that there will be a higher presence of Police at future Warrington v Wigan games, and we also discussed the possibility of the pub in question being close for all future Warrington home games! Which in my opinion will be a great result.
Here is an email i have received from Andy gatcliffe CExec of Warrington:
Quote Good morning Craig,
First and foremost, thankyou for taking the time to email me following the game on Saturday and to update me on the disgraceful incident that occurred to yourself and your girlfriend.
This matter has already been passed onto the Police and they are I believe, investigating both this matter and also a further incident that involved Wigan fans throwing a bottle at a passing car on Dallam Lane (after the game),in which a child in the car was I am informed, hit by the bottle.
My Stadium Manager,Bernie Lenihan (copied above), has asked the Police to keep us fully informed on their investigations and we,as a Club,as I am sure that Wigan Warriors would also, will take the required action to ban any Club fan(s) identified/prosecuted by the Police.
This minority element of 'so called fans' are not now or ever will be welcomed at either Club,or in fact by the game in general.
I can report that there were no poor behaviour issues or any other incidents within the stadium whatsoever and that the only incidents were in the surrounding streets, not that this excuses this totally unacceptable behaviour at all.
I wish you and your girlfriend well.
Kind regards,
Andy Gatcliffe
CEO
Warrington '"
I expect another phone call from the Police tomorrow with the results of them scanning the CCTV from Saturday.
Even IF these people do not get caught, i will consider it a result if the games are policed better next time and that this doesnt happen to anyone again.
Cheers
