As soon as the employer can't afford to (or don't wish to) pay the employee the contract is effectively over though. You can't stop an employee working elsewhere because you might want to employ them again sometime in the future.

Think you are missing my point as it wasn't about Chase. If you offer someone a contract extension then you clearly want to keep them. If that person then says he wants to go to Oz it would be wrong to stand in their way and our owner didn't. 3 weeks later it appears he has signed for Toronto. He either needs work on his cities of the world or someone has avoided paying compensation or a transfer fee. This is my opinion which could of course be wrong but the smell is not very nice
