man in SL ?

A few years ago there used to be a competition in which anyone who wanted
to be up for it, could enter a 100 yard race in full kit and carrying a rugby ball.

I don't know if this is still going but it seems a brilliant opportunity for a big
sponser to step in and claim it.

It could be an annual event at some prestigious occasion, ie, half time at Wembley
or Old Trafford, although if playing in the game, the coach may not be too impressed.

I think Atkins must be one of the fastest, certainly has one of the best balance
running styles I've seen, and I did see the great Bev many times.

Ryan's pace doesn't seem to be from a standing start more when he gets his legs pumping and then he is like a greyhound on speed.

Two recent examples of Ryan's fantastic speed , one against Wigan this season when he chased back and stopped Sam Tomkins scoring a certain try at a crucial time. The other was last Sunday when he just slipped into overdrive to sore his 1st try.

Ryan could give Usain Bolt a run for his money.

Those races always seemed to be a 100m sprint carrying the ball. I would much prefer the competitiors to start behind the goal line with the ball on the 20m line and the winner is the first to ground the ball at the other end. This would introduce a bit of skill rather than pure pace. Do you take the risky option and kick the ball forward hoping for a fortunate bounce, or do you take the slower safer option of scooping the ball up. Knockon = disqualification.

Atkins is quick but not the quickest in superleague, Jodie Broughton and Tom Briscoe are both quicker than Atkins.

Will sharp looks very quick.

Look out for Jamel Chisholm, possibly about to break through into Rhinos first team. Lightning pace.

Won the 'fastest man in SL' contest a couple of years ago doing 96 metres in 11.1 seconds from a standing start, on grass and in full playing kit...aged just 17.

It's certainly a very quick left edge with Atkins and Riley compared to our right edge which seems more about strength.

The fastest in SL are the Wigan fans, when their team is not winning.

Jason Crookes is fast over a distance, caught Briscoe when he broke clear. And nearly caught Atkins at Odsal from other side of the pitch.

I suppose many things come into play rather than just pure speed.

Fastest over 25 yards
Fastest over 50-75 yards
Ability to step at full tilt etc. etc.

It was Offiah that said Jiffy was quicker than him over 10- or 20 yards, cant remember the exact details.

Incidentally when did 'speed' become 'pace' in sport?

Who's that Catalan winger? Cardace? He looked quick when I seen him score a try t'other week against Widnes.

Is Atkins faster than Evans? Evans has looked quick in the first team and in those viddies of him as a pup he looked lightning.

Charnley is quicker than Atkins. Im sure ive read hes under 12 seconds for the 100 m

You had a youth player a few years ago called james howarth he was from wigan who ran 100m in 11 secs flat at the age of 16 now that was quick.

Super leagues fastest man is never taken seriously as most teams send youth players.

I am guessing ryan king is the fastest at wigan if not then its either sam or charnley

atkins isnt the fastest at warrington apparently rhys williams holds that crown??? never seen it in game time like but hey ho

From a standing start Rob Burrow is the fastest
Jamal Chisholm is lightening fast for the whole length

Hicks could go on either wing - still get goosebumps over his hat-trick at Wembley. Incredible.

Burrow's acceleration is certainly phenomenal, but he tends to get caught in most long chases.

That's always the problem with 100m times - a better marker would probably be 60m times. Burrow has to be one of the quickest over 10-20m because he's very quick off the mark due to his size. From what I've seen I doubt Briscoe would be in the top ten over a long distance - he hits his top sepeed quickly but once going the likes of Atkins would catch him fairly easily I would have thought?

That should be the half time entertainment. Two random beery fat blokes of equal size (possibly one from each team). Would be hundred times better than Fusion Elite or any of that other dancing crap.
