Yes but if people are also offering to help out the odd hour here and there, best get a decent system sorted out.

| I'd be up for a few hours a month. Maybe the club could look at offering a reward for people who put in over a certain amount, possibly a discount on a season ticket, couple of free pints at a game that sort of thing - would show they appreciate the effort.

| The club might balk at the idea of having a stall on a car boot sale but its probably not a bad idea. Whether its promoting the club lottery, flogging tickets/ merchandise or just raising awareness of the club, it's got to be worth a try if 1,000s of potential customers are standing on your doorstep.

Yeah would be good if soemthing like this could be sorted. Could even be the first step towards a proper dialogue between club and fans.

| any one know how many people turned up for this car boot sale that nobody knew about, as fo the volunteer think, last Friday I decided to use public transport from Wardley to get to the ground, I set off at 11.30 first bus 37 into swinton, than just after 12:15 got the First Bus 22 to Eccles in Eccles for 12.55, got some Lunch and then onto the 1.20 67, got as far as the Unicorn just as the Police were closing the road, the bus detoured down to the Trafford Centre, got stuck in the traffic for a bit before getting onto the motorway. Arrived at Barton at 2.25. Not bad nearly 3 hours to get there, I got a lift back 15 mins.
So unless I can get a lift the volunteering thing is out of the window,
Mr M Mouse, what professional club uses volunteers? have you noticed something called the Olympics
( bigger than Salford City Reds) going on at the moment are using 30,000 volunteers.

Are we all going to donate our old shirts and programmes and flog them at car boot sales too? The event last week was a charity event that had publicity on a local radio station that attracted thousands. As it was held at the site of our stadium it would have been a good idea to have a presence.
Im sure we had a stall at Salford Precinct years ago but I dont think club shops or stalls have a great value and certainly dont make a profit. There was a period in the 90s when a lot of sports clubs set up shops in retail units but they didnt last long and its now only the clubs with significant retail sales that still have the stores.
The idea of volunteers is a good idea. Whats the latest with the Junior Reds, anyone know? We need to target the fans of the future, weve got the facilities and with organisation and offering the right product it can work. My 6 year old girl has been to games and enjoyed it. She wanted a shirt, but the smallest replica shirt was way too big for her. She now has a football shirt she wears every other day and has got a Man City membership pack with stuff like City water bottle, cap and stickers. Kids are growing up quick these days and we need to get them interested in the match day event.

| Peel Green was grid locked at 6.30 am on sunday morming , the boot sale was more than busy from what I can gather.£10.00 for a car and £15.00 for a van was the going rate so a profit could have been made for very little out lay.

Are people genuinely talking about the club selling merchandise at a charity car boot sale?

| A stall giving out promotional material, maybe with the club mascot there for the kids would have been good to see. Bit too much to ask though, as it might involve staff giving up a couple of hours free time to benefit the club.

| I'm not sure that a car boot sale is the best place to showcase the club, but there is the kernel of an idea here. There are a number of festivals in Salford (Ordsall, Langworthy, etc.) where they're crying out for people to run stalls, especially since their funding has been savaged by our 'all in it together' government. Despite the festivals having to cut back, they're still drawing decent crowds in. I think a stall there with maybe a few players doing training drills with kids would be a way to build awareness of the club in the community.

perhaps the officer from the council who is now joint CEO would be able to sort this, with all his community links and his support for community ventures, then again he might not.

The club isn't doing this already??? I thought this would be the kind of thing the Reds Foundation did - promoting sport, health etc in the community.

Nope. They certainly weren't at Ordsall, and they weren't at Langworthy yesterday.

Didn't the club send out tens of thousands of flyers to local residents prior to the season kicking off? I'd like to know what kind of response that got (I fancy it's not in the tens of thousands).'"
I don't know what the general web-etiquette is when it comes to quoting one's self but some findings are worth sharing:
Quote ="Steve on SCR Facebook"7) The car boot sale - with hindsight we would have done something there. Why didn't we? Two reasons - 1) nobody expected it to be as successful as it was, not even Real Radio. From memory the prediction was around 200 cars. Presumably Sale made the same call as we did because they weren't there either? It was a bad call and I hold my hands up to that one. However, when the FA had the ladies football match there a few weeks earlier we did have a presence - I begged, borrowed and almost stole a budget after convincing the higher ups it was a 'fantastic opportunity! 5000 new potential fans at a sporting event in our stadium! Unmissable!'. We designed and printed 5000 leaflets with a great 2 for the price of one offer on it, paid some lovely promo girls to hand them out with a welcoming smile. At the end of the day they had given out over 3000 leaflets and smiles - and the ticket office was open for people to go and buy while they were still there, or they had right up until kickoff to come and buy... I won't make you guess how many were used - it was less than one. '"

I feel considerably less smug than the originators of threads like this feel aggrieved.
It would be nice to think evidence like this would make people think before launching another multi-page rant about the club failing to act appropriately but we all know if they skipped a chance to leaflet a similar event this weekend this site would once again explode.

| So we try something once, it doesn't work at the first attempt, so rather than keep hammering away for a bit we just give up at the first hurdle? I wasn't aware that's how marketing of any kind works, but there you go, what do I know?

Yep. The entire tone of this thread is fully justified because one day, one of the X-thousand leaflets handed out may be put to good use.
Point being, the club DID act - not on the car boot, granted, but the football event they were lambasted for ignoring. And it achieved the sum total of f*ck all.
I've no idea if this will spur them on to try, try again or give it up as a naff use of resource but here's what I am sure of - this wont be the last thread to celebrate their failings.

| Credit to the club for trying something. Pretty surprised none of em got used however coupled with the poor take up of the big MEN promotion for the Hull KR(?) game it seems Salford have a lot of work to do change the image of the club.

Which is half of my point. If the club just decide to give up on pushing anything then we've no chance of changing the club's image.

| I know a lot of people would like to see the club plastering the city with flyers, but it apparently provides poor returns, and money could be spent more effectively elsewhere to promote the club.
The recent England football game seems to backs that up.
