Away from the festival, the Pendle Witch in Atherton had the very enjoyable Theakston Vanilla Stout 4.5% last night.

Good news ... Doncaster is the best place in Poland to get a decent pint.

The Grainstore Brewery Rutland Beast 5.3% was a welcome find in the Looking Glass, Warrington on Saturday evening.

Dukeries Black Tie 4.8%, a gorgeous coffee chocolate stout in the Gatehouse and the always reliable Acorn Darkness 4.2% in the Red Lion, enjoyed this weekend.

The gorgeous Joules Slumbering Monk 4.5% is back at the Tut.

The excellent Thornbridge Lord Marples 4.0% sampled (oncemore) in the Looking Glass, Warrington last night.

Another Thornbridge, Black Harry 3.9%, which I've not had before as far as I'm aware, was also very nice. Described as a dark fruity ale.

The local Wetherspoons have been featuring ales from the Hop Studio brewery in York. The Red Lion had Fudge, a brown ale 4.5% and the Gatehouse both Marzen and Porter. The former a 'lager' with salted caramel 3.8% and the latter a 4.3% vanilla porter.

Goffs Jouster 4.0% in the Broomfield Tavern, Coventry (next to the Butts Arena) was a likeable Tawny Ale with a nice combination of malt and fruits.

Sampled a decent ale in (Wilkies) Tavern, Warrington last night. Ayr Brewing Company Jolly Beggars Amber Ale, a best bitter at 4.2%, malty with caramel and toffee flavours. The 4T's Stout at 5.0% was very nice too.

Cask Corner last night ... Green Duck Beer Co Duck Dastardly Dark Velvet Stout 5.0%, lovely.

Had a bottle of Robinsons Unicorn Black last night. A rich dark stout at 4.1%, very nice indeed.

Unfortunately, looking on the Robinson's website, it doesn't look like it's available as a Cask ale.

Was presented with a bottle of Marston's Owd Rodger 7.4% at the weekend which I opened last night. Excellent stuff and this one is available as a cask ale albeit occasionally - one to seek out.

Birthday celebrations in Donny yesterday evening, Red Lion, Chantry Iron & Steel 4%. 3 pints before 2 pints after an Italian .
Very enjoyable both the food & beer !

Raspberry blonde in the gatehouse is one to try light and smooth not sure of the %

Bridgehouse Brewery Cherry Choc Stout 6.0% in the Tut yesterday .... gorgeous.

Nearly forgot to mention ... kudos to London Skolars and Caveman Brewery for the real ale available at last weekend's fixture. Two choices were available and the Neanderthal 4.6% was an excellent dark coloured best bitter.

A few nice beers sampled in Rochdale yesterday.

Kicked off with a pint of TT Boltmaker 4.0% in the Cemetery and then on to the Baum for a couple of ales not previous sampled. Firstly, Green Mill Brewery Pot Black Porter 4.4%, followed by Liverpool Organic Brewery "Heroes of Liverpool" Kitty Wilkinson Chocolate & Vanilla Stout 4.5%. Both were very nice but slight preference for the stout. Next up another porter, this time Knocker Up 4.8% from Blackburn's Three B's Brewery. Again, very much to my liking.

A 25-minute wait on Leeds station on the way home allowed for a pint of Rudgate's Battle Axle, a best bitter at 4.2% in Wetherspoons.

Stancil brewery version of Barnsley Bitter at The Cask left me spellbound. I thought for years that the Acorn brewery version which is a regular at The Plough on West laith Gate was the bogs dollocks. The Stancil brew is as near to the nectar that was Barnsley Bitter as you will get. A proper step back in time and at 3.8% you can enjoy a few. If you value a Yorkshire bitter then please try.

Some recent highlights ...

Wolf Brewery Sirius Dog Star in the Red Lion, Doncaster last week ... a deep red best bitter, malty but with fruit in the after-taste.
Farmers Brown Cow in the Rawson Spring, Hillsborough yesterday ... an old favourite.
Fuggle Bunny Oh Crumbs in the Swim Inn, Sheffield yesterday ... caramel and biscuit flavoured, very nice.

A couple of highlights of a visit to Wakefield earlier this week;

Saltaire Triple Chocoholic in The Hop ... always a winner!
North Riding Brewery Oatmeal Stout 5.0% in Harry's Bar ... new to me and very nice.
