Remember the Naughton Park days the pitch would be rock solid and decissions to play were made about 1 hr or 2 hrs before KO time.

Unless I`m missing a major storm in Widnes now I would have thought it would have been ok for later.

New stadium curse , the height and shape of new stands keeps the pitch in shade , from what I can remember of Naughton park there wasn't a stand on the south side

Yes sack the groundsmen, damn him and his lack of control over the weather. In this age of technology he should be able to generate a tropical micro-climate right over the top of the stadium to prevent this sort of thing...

There was a stand over the South side though I don't recall it being as high as the current one..

Even so, 20 years on health and safety has changed and the game is no longer a winter sport which means that clubs are no longer prepared for playing in winter conditions.

Yes there was. There was a stand on every side of NP, Stary. In fact, the south stand was the main stand where the posh folk sat. So nowt's changed there.

That's how us posh folk from the South Stand pronounce it.




The Sth Stand, the Nth Stand, the clock end stand on the West Terrace, and the ‘Cow Shed’ at the score board end. So yes, four stands. Ok there were gaps here and there.

There were two butty bars; one in the corner of the Nth stand near the ‘Cow Shed’ and another in the Sth-West corner.

Ahh,memories.Pies and Oxo's hotter than molten steel.

The pies were nice but, if you got there late, you'd get the one that had only been in the oven a few minutes and they were freezing. Botulism must have been rife in those days.

I will admit that it was a bit of a tip, BUT, way back in the prehistoric days before Sooper Dooper League, Naughton Park was one of the very few RL grounds where you could stand under cover on all 4 sides of the ground (Barrow was another !). The cowshed on the east side admittedly wasn't very big and the cover on the west side (to the right of the players' tunnel if you were stood at that end) was pulled down some time around 1980-1985 ish.
