Wouldnt want Phelps good player but nothing special. Amos Roberts has that X factor in the backs but we do need a half back or 2 for next year as priority.

Just checked mate, King was given the number 29 shirt for 2010. So you were probably right about him being on the cap for the 2010 season.

quota spaces shouldn't be used on 'utility backs' under any circumstances, they need to be saved for top class players in key positions.
we need a half-back, I'd go as far as saying we won't make the top8 next year without a new halfback...so any other signing would be a complete waste.

What if we signed a uk half back and got a utility quota player on a one year deal?

| Re Ewan Dowes - has it been announced he's going to Bradford yet? If not, does that mean we're still in talks? Find it strange that a week after our season ended it's not been confirmed.

He might be holding out for the deal he wants, will probably get it when teams get desperate in a few months.

Yup. I wouldnt be held to ransom by Dowes but if it looks like we only have 3 props going into next year we may need to just cough up what he wants.

Imo i think the Briggs rumour if true is a good option to explore. Young and has been a points machine in NL. Bringing him in would give us the cover we need at SO SH. Also a student for Longy a uk player relatively cheap and would give us time to explore other half back options in NRL for 2012 when as people are predicting we will have plenty of salary cap to play with, by then Briggs could step up hopefully.
Utility or players who come into a qouta place who can play one or two positions isnt a bad thing. If we could get hold of a talented overseas player in the mould of a Lyon, Inu or Hunt ( I know he's unavalible but class utility player). That would give us a centre option and cover for SO.
Just a thought!

You'll probably find that panic time simply exists because there are no replacement props out there for Radford or Dowes. Would you rather we go into next season with 3 props. We talked to Fieldon and LMS and lost out on both. We showed good intention but as FC usually do we wouldnt/couldnt match what the big boys offer.

| Could move other options such as Fitz up to prop and spell him more inreasing his playing life span and look at back row options. Not sure retaining props who do an average job will help bring this club forward.

I agree, retaining average props isnt the way to go but with Cusack gone and hopefully Dowes i can tolerate keeping Radford. Back to your original point, Rovers have nothing to do with this.
For what its worth my props next year would be:
Moa
O'Meley
Radford
Lauaki
New Signing
and i'd use Fitz, Manu, Tickle in the 2nd row. I'd play Whiting or Washy (or Westerman) at 13. I'd start with Fitz and Tickle in the 2nd row and i'd bring Manu on for impact where he has always been more effective.
If we dont make a new signing in the props i'd tolerate a lower deal for Dowes as the 5th prop but only as a very last resort.

I think we could make better use of the players we have already signed up anyway if we are to change our style of play.
Fitz to prop, Whiting to 13 and Briscoe to left centre would give the team a different dimension.

Agree with most of that, but Lauaki's not best used at prop IMO - no appetite to be first man in in defence and more dangerous used wider.

| A centre and a half back for me although I would like to see Briscoe given a run at centre maybe take a punt on Calders. Lynnes a bit of yet maybe another year imo and as much as I like Whiting I'd like to see an out n out centre with a bit of pace.

I actually think Lauaki looks disinterested a lot of the time in the back row. Bringing him into the middle might get him involved more. First impressions for me are that Lauaki is here for a bit of a holiday. He was once referred to in Oz as the best impact prop there was.

Personally think we'd be better off with Fitzgibbon at prop and sticking with Manu and Lauaki rotating in the back row. Radford/O'Meley and Fitzgibbon/Moa looks to have better balance than Lauaki/Moa IMO.
