| This thread is a bit like that film review programme that used to be on the telly, hosted by Barry Norman.
Same title every year, just change the number.

| I don't mind Hanbury in all honesty, seems a gifted player with good speed. I would hope for a better player than him but that will be harder than we think the sign someone. Hence why Wigan signed Green and I would rather have Hanbury over Green.
As for Sammut, not a fan of his neither am I of Tim Smith. Decent attacking player but defence is woeful, and before anyone says it. I know you don't sign a half back due to his defence, but it would be a bonus.
Who could we realistically be looking at from SL? Hanbury, Sammut, Smith, Bosc perhaps? Gaskell?

We've got Holdsworth for that, we need pace alongside him. Horne would have broken the line twice last night if he'd had the pace, we need someone of similar ilk.

Handbury, and to a lesser extent Gaskell would transform our attack. Pace at the line causes problems.

| Quote ="east hull FC fan"We've got Holdsworth for that, we need pace alongside him.'" Totally agree as we have halves who you can basically ignore with the ball and just pick off the runners because neither Holdsworth or Horne are going to beat a side with their legs.
The best game Holdsworth has had was against Saints where he played really close to the line compare to last night where he didn't get a single hand laid on him because of how far he was from the defensive line when passing which was the main contributor to our pedestrian attack.

I am slightly ignorant of the fine detail of the rules but.....
If Brett Seymour is ona position where by he is not (*and it would have to be definately not) playing again this season, could be be deregistered as a player?
Of course there has to be someone out there available as well.

Doubt it. We have £60k left according to Pearson at the forum, Seymour would have been paid off had he signed.

I'd imagine we could de-register him, but not sure on cap situation as I thought once you'd played a salary cap (read competitive) game your full wage counted? Otherwise you'd have people de-registered every week to build up a playoff kitty.

There used to be a rule you could de-register long term injured players (6months+ out IIRC)

Not sure we ever put an offer in TBH. It was talked about on here but I don't recall it ever being stated officially. I might have forgotten it, mind.

| Putting our hopes on a player like tim smith is like putting them on an injury prone 34 year old all over again. Great player on his day but his days are too few and far between. There's a reason he's at wakefield and not playing in the NRL

Would only improve us in the games he "turns up". He has mental health issues and too much of a risk for me. We need someone more likely to be successful

| Do you see Holdsworth as the organiser, therefore looking to sign a running 7 who takes on the line more? I think Handbury would be a cracking signing for you but might take some getting from Widnes. Its a difficult task due to the limited availability. On one hand you want someone who is guaranteed to do the job for you, which limits you to current SL halves because lets face it youll struggle to get a 1st choice NRL half. As good as NRL understudies can be ala Dobson, Dureau, you can never be sure and if you take another risk (Dykes, Long etc) it could really cost you long term

| I reckon we could have signed Miller last close season, but the Prince opportunity came along.
By the time we went back for him, Wests had a new coach in place who wanted to retain him.
I'd have taken a punt on Sammut this year. He has the unpredictability & pace which we sorely need.
