I think I was trying to say that I reckon it's better to have, how can I put this succinctly.. less of a marquee siging, McMenemy, Swain, Seymour, than a better quality who is a bit older who are always going to be short term stop gaps.

Two year deals with options are always a bit up in the air after just one season and not great for a settled squad in my opinion.

I like the Melbourne approach of spending big on a quality backbone of players and then using a mixture of journeymen and youngster to fill in the gaps. The quality on the pitch and from the coaching (

The need to bend the rules is a result of shambolic coaching and management at the club since 2006 leaving us with a huge void in the squad which should be filled by good quality players from our youth set up.

If we don't have cap space, or the prospect of generating some, then I don't see why we will have bothered getting an exemption for Heremaia. If Gleeson were to leave, for instance, we'd have plenty of cap to spare.

Looks almost nailed on now i think, theres no way we can have any cap left next season unless Fitz is on monster wages or Ogre doesn't take up his 3rd year.

Agreed. My point about Obst has always been that even if he was only on an average wage (60k) that extra 60k shortfall could stop us going the extra yard to get a player we really want. We were always going to be looking to recruit in the playmaking positions next season so I just couldn't see how a 2 year deal was ever going to make sense as Obst just won't get any gametime.

Indeed. I would expect that the club are keeping the situation under review and if it looks like he'll miss a significant chunk of next season then he'll be released.

Is that enough to probably take a pay cut? Unless they're willing to offer him a longer deal with retirement looming, I think he might want to hold on to the money for another year, as it's likely that they'd still take him at the end of his current deal.
