I think there's a difference between Russell and Charnley though. Charnley didn't have to push a player of Sam Tomkins' ability out of the way. Tomkins' I doubt will be going anywhere for a while!

Shaun Briscoe also had huge potential at Wigan, but Wigan didn't want him in front of Radlinski. There's only so long a player will be willing to sit on the bench, so unless they move him to a different position (or Tomkins), then I don't think they'll hold on to him after his contract is through.

If Finch leaves, as is rumoured, then i would imagine Tomkins will go to s/o and then Russell will be there starting FB.

I think Tomkins abilities would be wasted at 6 but with the lack of talent out there and overseas players becoming less likely to make the trip over here it looks likely.

Would be a very big risk for them to lose Tommy L and Finch and expect their attacking full back to switch to the halves and then play a kid a full back where there main threat came from. At Hull we would use the kid in balance with Horne I believe .
Just wishful thinking that we will sign him though, unless Pearson has offered some cash too as we have a lack of quality players at that position we need cover.

I doubt Russell would force Tomkins out of the fullback position, and he looked a lot less confident/natural playing on the wing for Wigan, maybe he's chosen to stay with Hull as back up and an eventual replacement for Horne? People seem to forget amongst the contract talk that it's ultimately down to the player in question and their choice.

After thinking about it, I think it's maybe a clever ploy by Rovers for the benefit of Welham. With a right hand side of Shenton and Hall, teams won't be able to resist sending most of their traffic that way and thus Welham might stop getting shown up so often.

Heard the Lovegrove one today and it's a pretty strong rumour. Like you i find it really odd, unless we are losing more forwards. Also just read on sporting life that Shenton has been linked to Hull. Not sure if i would really like him here to be honest.
