Lee Gilmour has joined Wakefield Trinity Wildcats on a 2-year deal as assistant-coach + could also play. Had been on loan from Cas Tigers.

......and Wakefield Wildcats captain Danny Kirmond needs operations on both hands + a knee. Unlikely to play again this year

Happy to see him as an assistant coach, he has a wealth of experience to pass on, hopefully he won’t be playing too much.

Very under rated player Gilmour and still did a decent job for you guys this season. Genuine question, how does this sort of thing work on salary cap?

If he doesn't play, he doesn't count. Play 1 game and his full salary counts. But we aren't near the cap so it won't effect us.

Lots of experience of the current game to pass on to both players and other coaches and can still do it on the field.

Cheers for that. He'll have a lot to offer as a coach Gilmour and will prove a useful player if needed.

Think Gilmour still has something to offer on the field, as his knee injury may prolong his career for another season.
Much the same as Ali's injury has been a blessing in disguise.
Probably would have signed a one year deal without picking up his injury.

A good signing- he's let no-one down while he's been with us, bags of experience to pass on and a handy card to have up the sleeve if required to play.

Wonder how he'll compare against Willie Poching, Chris Chester's new assistant at Hull KR?
Poching has more history with us and might have been a better fit. Coaches do seem to pick some strange and unpredictable assistants, although I suppose it's better than the old day's when it was just their best mate.

For me the question is
What qualifications have they got?

I'm not particularly aiming that at Poching and Gilmour.

Having been a player at whatever level and working under whatever number of coaches is OK but no where near enough.

In modern sports, Coaching at professional level is about so much more.

I'd be very surprised if anyone was allowed to coach at professional level without being qualified. Lots of players get themselves qualified whilst playing so they're ready to further their career when finished as a player.
