| Quote ="Fishermanscap"I’m dismayed at what’s happened to this country over the last few years. The inability to accept defeat is sickening. It started with the Scottish referendum and has got worse since.
A majority is a majority that’s how democracy works, it’s simple.
People seem to want their own mini democracy in which their candidate is the only winner, pathetic.
So what do we end up with. A minority of people who think it’s more important to sabotage all things Boris even if it makes things far worse.
The result is the result and it’s a resounding one. We are leaving Europe, we have five years of Tory rule. You can fight it like some child or get on with it and make the best of it. A well reasoned post, it's a pity others can't accept the will of the majority, it's done now and it's time to move on otherwise the next 5 years will just make them bitter and resentful.
I did not vote and for the record have never done, so I have no regrets when I get let down and disappointed with false promises, and as for most politicians that old saying you can always tell when they're lying when their lips move comes into my thoughts when you see them spouting their rhetoric.

Not sure if you're joking but you're right as it happens.
The ridiculously liberal education system of the past 40 years, yes even in Thatcher's day has given people a monstrous sense of entitlement.
Everyone should have a dream and aim for that dream and settle for nothing less, utter nonsense, in the real world there are simply not enough 'dream' lives to go around. All is possible if you just believe, see above. Don't let anyone tell you no, a self evidently stupid assertion, as they will because they can and sometimes they can hurt you really bad if you do. All is possible with effort, no it's not, sadly you also need so much more to be a real success like actual talent, common sense and a nice dollop of luck....and so on.
We need to start educating people for life again not for a Disney fantasy epic. You want a gender realignment you have it when your 18 and when you might just know what you really think, just an example I could give dozens more.
One day if we are not careful the flawed wonders of Western civilisation and democracy will crumble without people even noticing. What they will notice is what replaces it and by then it will be too late. We need to toughen up, not become hard or mean but just realistic,

| Brexiters want to take the country back to the 50s and now some on here want to bring back hanging. I despair. And how anybody in their right mind can think for one millisecond that the Tories in general and Johnson in particular give even one tiny fraction of a flying f.. K about places such as Blyth Valley, Workington, Dewsbury and Wakefield is beyond me. For just one example of their mindset look at how disabled and seriously ill people have been forced to work and/or denied benefits. Being callous and uncaring of the vulnerable, sick, less able and plain unlucky is hard wired in to Tory DNA. I guarantee that all those people who think they've been ignored and left behind are going to be sorely disappointed. Sorry.

| The death penalty are you mad, even some of the states in the USA are removing it from their statute because it does not work. How many have been released because of miscarriages of justice meaning they were innocent. I suppose these cases would probably not be reopened because it’s a little tricky to bring someone back from the dead.
What next we revisit the introduction of workhouses like one of their new MP’s suggested. Why not bring back fox hunting, I fear for any of the minorities who are going to face an increase in prejudice that some of our fellow citizens believe Brexit allows them.

[uI wish we'd get someone in that was strong enough to bring back the death penalty so we could save money on ridding some of the scum in this country that that thinks its ok the murder people[/u'"
All you have to do is look to the USA to see the wider negatives of the death penalty, no matter how disgusting the crime, even in states like Texas that love the death penalty, you see if you watch and read about it enough that it doesn't works as a rule. Sure there are some that have done the crime, no questions asked and you'd love to straight walk them out of court and put one on their heads because their crimes are so heinous, but obviously law doesn't work like that and most cases are very complex and and are sometimes down to things like quality of lawyer or which State they get convicted etc. A study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences determined that at least 4% of people on death row were and are likely innocent.
Ateotd it takes years and years for prisoners to get to the death penalty stage, even for those that were bang to rights and being on death row costs far more housing them because they get more privileges, more officers are watching fewer men because it's one per cell. Like I say most are not put to death until they've been imprisoned 20+ years, so it becomes redundant, especially when you take into account the average age of a prisoner doing life in prison is in their 60's , so many die before the get put to death. So many states in the USA have stopped using it because it's proved ineffectual, even states that have the DP many haven't put anyone to death in years .I read an article about a bloke in Florida man who was sentenced to death for strangling three women but died in May 2013—of natural causes. He had been on death row for nearly 40 years. The state never executed him because he was"too crazy to be killed", just shows how weird and complex cases are when a state like Florida doesn't kill a guy like that.
I'm really interested in anything about Law & Crime, did Law at College and still have a huge interest in the subject, reading and watched just about everything I can get my hands on and I'll be honest, I can say watch one documentary about an horrific child murderer or serial killer etc and you see red and want the Death Penalty brought back over here. But when I calm down & think it through again , especially when you know how many people have been wrongly put on death row, plus we know it's no deterrent to murder etc, I think again. A study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences determined that at least 4% of people on death row were and are likely innocent.
Anyone that really wants it brought back I'd suggest watching a documentary movie called 'The Fear of 13', apart from it being an amazing piece of work, it tells the story first hand of a guy called Nick Yarris, who was convicted of murder and spent 21 years on Death Row in Pennsylvania, until DNA proved him innocent, that for me makes it not wort it.
IMO as long as the ones who deserve it don't see the light of day, that's good with me and I'm happy to pay it. .

This is the very populism streak in the working classes that the far right tap into so very well. Forget how bad or otherwise Corbyn is, the fact that huge swathes of average Joes (of which I am one) can somehow think that the best bet for the next 5 years is the Tory party, after literally butchering the social fabric and structures they rely upon (via 'austerity') for the last 9 years, is incomprehensible to me. Don't try and get your head around it you'll drive yourself nuts.

I don't know about 16 billion a year but 'the ONS reports that the UK government's net contribution to the EU – that is, the difference between the money it paid to the EU and the money it received – was £11.0 billion in 2018 compared with the £20.0 billion theoretical liability. '
[urlhttps://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/governmentpublicsectorandtaxes/publicsectorfinance/articles/theukcontributiontotheeubudget/2017-10-31[/url
Or to use another website like Fullfact they have it at 9 million a year we contribute.
[urlhttps://fullfact.org/europe/our-eu-membership-fee-55-million/[/url
As they say Quote It’s been claimed that we send £350 million a week to the EU. That misses out the rebate, and it doesn’t represent the total economic costs and benefits of EU membership to the UK.
£350 million is roughly what we would pay to the EU budget without the rebate. The UK actually paid closer to £250 million a week. '"
So maybe not what EW said but a whichever way you look at it a fair crack.

The question also has to be asked, even if we do pay in all this extra and will thus have a saving, who the F in their right mind thinks it will be spent on the working classes or the services predominantly used by them?! And if people think the EU nationals are gonna have to leave most of em will be able to apply for settled status anyway. Not to mention most immigration still comes from outside the EU anyway. Can't wait for the huge difference we'll see when we finally 'get Brexit done'
P.S - excellent post on the death penalty SC

| What I do find unbelievable is that the Tories give us 10+ years of austerity, then blame the immigrants and us this to suggest that we leave the EU and over half of the country dances to their tune.
If there had been sufficient funding for education and the NHS etc, nobody would have batted an eyelid but, "we" have been squeezed like never before and e are trusting the very people that have denied benefits to the disabled and terminally ill to put things right
Having said that, labour were a shambles and should have knocked the Tories off the political map but failed miserably - it's bloody depressing.
One thing Boris Johnson isn't, is a man of the people - never has been and never will be and when you look at who is sitting next to him round the cabinet table (Rees Mogg and Pritti Patel etc) God help us.
The ecconomy is already flat lining and "we" think they are going to spend money up North, it's embarrassing.
This is the same party that has already tried to kill off industry in Yorkshire in the 80's

All true, but you only need a computer and a bit of time and the want to truly learn & educate yourself on things , however left or right you may be.
Personally just about everyone one I know except for a few far lefties, fall pretty much dead , probably like most of the country when it generally comes to how we want our country to work and be perceived by others. That is most people support socialised medicine via the NHS and want those in genuine need through no fault of their own to be helped by the government. They don’t support ill-judged military meddling in the affairs of others. They believe in fair play and warmly welcome legal immigrants who want to become British and contribute to society. They don’t mind their taxes being spent on the deserving. Unless I'm misjudging people & without getting too deep, that's what most people want.

| IMO Labour have only themselves to blame. Corbyn was too wishy washy on certain matters and the people of Wakefield were clearly fed up with Creagh and Cooper going against their constituents on Brexit. Personally I was torn on Corbyn, he was more articulate and intelligent then Johnson who hid in a fridge to avoid an interview, but at the same time I was concerned at his idea that terrorist prisoners should be rehabilitated and not deported (or better yet shot).
