Because they've know for ages who will get licences nest time! Some assumptions may have been made on the way re the fiscal performance/stability of individual clubs in the meantime, but nonetheless, the RFL are clear about the directions they want to go!

Surely setting themselves up for a legal challenge, if the applications from the new applicants are no better than the incumbents they have no standing outside sports law.
The only one that makes sense regards a definite entry is not good news for Widnes either, and that is the change of rules to allow a 'foreign' side in, hello Toulouse.

| I think there is a disclaimer that if a club enters an application they throw away the right to contest the outcome.

| Perhaps we should just have Superleague played on a rolling basis:
Next year we announce the teams for 2012, the following year we announce the teams for 2013 etc
Pot 1: Widnes, Toulouse, Barrow, Featherstone, Barrow
Pot 2: All current clubs
1 club drawn from Pot 1 to replace 1 club drawn from Pot 2. Give the incoming club a minimum of 3 seasons but replace a different club every year.
Draw to be made before the start of the season before to allow clubs time to plan.
Sounds ridiculous doesn't it ???? But is it anymore ridiculous than the current system?

| I'm late to this discussion but ultimately to me, this is just forced promotion/Relegation.
We used to have the bottom of league and top of lower league swapping places, based purely on results.
No we have a criteria to get into a league which implies that results alone will not relegate you and that the league will have stability
yet now they are saying no matter what you do, if the lower team meets the minimum, someone will have to make way....no matter how good they are.
That's just promotion and relegation on different criteria. If you are bottom of the franchise league you will be relegated, even if you are still better than the team coming up and tick all the boxes.

| Quote ="smoking monkey"I fear that may be the perception even though it's light years from reality. In the modern era Wakey as a city has not shown itself to have any real appetite for RL and in that respect Trinity's "massive potential" appears no greater than Salford's or Quins.
To suggest Cas have little opportunity to further themselves ignores the fact that we have already done that twice by bouncing back from two relegations when one would probably have finished Wakey as a viable business. Despite the adverse impact of 2 seasons in NL1 we have recovered any ground lost to you very quickly.
You are right to refer to crowd trouble at the Jungle, not because it was serious, but because RFLs over-reaction to it is surely indicative of Cas being set-up for the fall.'"
Some very good points there especially the bit about Wakey not having an appetite for RL. We have had a few relatively successful seasons in SL but have never built on it. The people of Wakefield are in general apathetic towards Trinity. Hopefully a new stadium will entice them out of their armchairs/out of the pub though I have my doubts I think it will probably just encourage more away fans to come.

| I can't be d reading thru all the pages on this topic, sorry if this has already been posted.
How can the RFL league come out and say a team will drop down a league, we have nine months before the april 2011 application deadline!
Whats to say by next april you and cas will be meid way thru your stadium build?
IMO it's shocking, it's pretty obvious the RFL have made there minds up to who will be 14 teams in 2012. so whats the point in the application system.
I hope both you and cas are still playing in super league in 2012, good rugby league towns like cas and wildcats should be in super league.
Maybe the RFL should look at the last time to be granted super league license, in two years they have played at two stadiums, had two names, terrible crowds and full of imports with no youth system.

I know a fair amount of people around Wakefield, who used to go every week to watch Trinity,up until the late 90's and stopped due to the stadium and facilities. When I've spoken to them over the years, they've said they would be straight back to watch Trinity if the had a new stadium etc.If there's a few that I personally know of,there must be a fair number of them around Wakefield.Added to that the people that would come to watch simply because it is a new stadium, then the thing would be keeping the people interested in coming back .A new stadium would mean buying better quality players and playing better RL and more exciting games, all of this would increase the fans no end.

| think a lot of people are forgetting what a franchise actually is, in legal terms. Basically it you buying in to the owner of the franchise to do what they say in the way they say it, Super league is NOT a sport, its a franchise, it does not matter how good or bad you are you are chosen as to how to promote the main owner ie super league uk, and its major backer - sky sports.
it does not even matter if you make money really for the franchise masters, so long as the global image is right and the main backer happy, put it this way if there was a mcdonalds in the vatican do you thing they would ever shut it if it lost cash, er no.
were gone in my humble, mainly because we thought we were still playing rugby league, with the old masters and the old rules.

True. Wakefield ended up below Fev that season, but weren't in a relegation place. We were booted out just like Fev. We won our way back in, against Fev, fair and square, on the pitch, where it counts. And whether you want to believe it or not, we've always complied with the minimum requirements for a SL stadium too... until now, of course. The bitterness of Fev fans should be directed elsewhere.

| I'm bitter. I acknowledge that. But not necessarily just with Wakey. I'm bitter with the gang of 3 who organised this concept years ago/ I'm bitter with the clubs that voted for it, Wakey being one of em.
I'm bitter with the clubs who voted against the NL champs gaining promotion a few years ago - Dews Hunslet - again Wakey being one of them.
I'm bitter at all the adverse comment from the press, the RFL/SL clubs and chairman made towards clubs in the NL. I'm bitter about some of the condescending comments doled out from fans of SL clubs to life outside SL - again, Wakey being an example of this!
It's not just wakey, but you get the picture I'm bitter about how the game is going. So when the gravy train is hitting the buffers shaking one or two off, sympathy and understanding and myself are somewhat difficult to find stood together!!!

I havent a problem with the 98 final, you beat us so deservedly took your place amongst the elite, my problem is what happened after. All the clubs agreed to give you a payment as the super league clubs wouldnt share there pot. Then you kicked us all in the teeth by voting to stop P+R disgraceful if you ask me, boy will that come back to haunt you when you get kicked out and can never get back. Next season will be the most difficult for you no matter how well you do in the league it wont matter, just like Fev in 95, you will write letters to RL papers, even MPs but it wont matter weve been there, no one listens. They will kick you out averaging around 5k, just like Fev did in 95 without a care in the world, you will scream about the injustice and no one will listen just like we did in 95. Then the seasons after your crowds will plummet and you will be replaced by a french team just like fev in 95 and that French team will probably get less crowds than you and may not even survive more than a couple of years, but whatever happens they wont put you back up. Also in 95 Fev reached the challenge cup semi just like you the other year, we had real hopes of going all the way now i have come to terms with the fact that because of the RFL stance i will never, ever see my team in one again, neither will you. Then the worst bit is after a few years of the championship you get young fans who wont know what you once were, fans of super league clubs that one day couldnt lace your boots mocking your club for the low fan turn outs. Get used to it its coming your way

Christ you are a cheery buggar aren't you?
I sympathise but no matter what division Trinity are in I shall follow them, and if we do get the boot
the thought of games against Fev, Batley, Dewsbury don't fill me with any dread at all!
No one will mock me for supporting my hometown club, and as for low turn outs, who cares?
We get a bit of stick for that nowadays anyway!
I dont want us to get the chop, but I won't be crying about it if we do.
