Rugby Union, at club level anyway, has always been an irrelevance in Scotland.

The old club sides (even in the stronger areas around the borders) used to pull in attendances equivalent to Conference football sides at best.

The national side will continue to pull in decent crowds for its half a dozen home games a year, but the club game is on its knees.

I only saw the Wales Ireland game this weekend but was quite exciting. BOD is still a class act. One of the few RU centres who knows how to draw a man and get the ball out to his winger. Most of them are actually poor at that but BOD has class oozing out of him.

Are you sure about this? Treviso have improved, having performed well in the PRO12, came within a whisker of beating Leicester in the EC and and beat the Ospreys. In the last three seasons they have beaten have beaten Scotland, France two times, unfortunate to lose to last minute kick against Ireland, lost narrowly to England and ran Austrlia very close. Italian Rugby is going through it's most consistent and successful period, so not sure where the logic is that entry to the PRO12 is not working.

For the supposed elite of their sport, the handling and general play on show whenever a bit of rain comes down is embarrassing. Was the same in France last night.

The commentators are saying it's quality.

Pretty awful skill levels on display by England and France here. Think Courtney Lawes is almost in double figures for missed tackles.

Italy v Wales was even worse, admittedly in poor conditions. Italy's handling was worse than a Championship 1 team, but I suppose natural rugby skills like that are not coached in Union anymore :s

Ireland really lacked a bit of composure today. Too many changes and a very poor lineout cost them.

Their attack was desperately poor, it has to be said.

Three games into the Six Nations and the table says the current Wales team are the second best in the Northern hemisphere and Scotland third. Doesn’t really say a lot for the quality on display in the tournament

My comment on the Scotland/Ireland thread on the BBC sport website was removed. It was a fairly reasonable one, criticising both codes for their respective flaws, but my opinion on Union's 2 minute scrums, penalty fests and atrocious handling must have upset their beloved Union. Bless. Scotland had 1 offload and zero line breaks

Oh dear, the current Pro12 champions the Ospreys have admitted that they have no funds with which to recruit and replace the players that have already agreed to leave in the summer.

A lifetime suspension from the sport in England in all ways, it seems, for Mike Scott. Without defending what he did, I didn't realise the RFU still went in for the whole banned-from-everything-ever trick.

New 6 Nations record today - most penalty goals in one game (12).

And I stand by what I said the other week - Scotland are the most technically inept rugby team I've seen.
