Quite, and it's the same question the coaches you lot moan about are asking too - because if it transpires that that is the way forward, we can look forward to some incredibly bland games of rugby to come.
It wasn't so long ago Wigan fans used to moan about Hudds/Quins etc trying to slow games down with negative defensive tactics - I wonder why it is now OK

| So basically what every other team wants is a quick play of the ball and 5 scoots and a kick, no expansive rugby or passing, just quick runs from dummy half. Yea thats very exciting

No, they want the same lattitude in attack that Wigan are allowed by other teams not taking 10 seconds to allow a play the ball, which is why they only seem to complain after Wigan games (Wigan aren't the only team that beats other teams, you do realise that don't you?)
Or are you saying Leeds don't play expansive rugby?

| The difference is that Wigan slow the tackled play before they put him on the ground. Quins & Hudds put them on the ground and messed around.
If Hetherington wants to know why the game was slow he should look at his pitch. It's the worst pitch in SL by a mile. He has a great team who can play fast open attractive rugby but they can't on that ploughed field.
Leeds management need to sort their own problems out regarding the boggy pitch slowing the game down rather than complain about others.
When Leeds came to Wigan it was they who were slow, they were slow in attack and slow in defence, Wigan were too fast for them in all aspects of the game all night. Hence they were out played and lost convincingly.
Gary Hetherington needs to focus his attention on his own club, the pitch, the slum of a ground, lousy access and no parking. It would still be a great ground if we were living in the 1960's but this is the 21st century and Headingly appears to be nothing more than an uncondemed slum!

Well we've won the most games so go figure, they complain because they are bitter, is it really that annoying seeing us top of the league. If we wernt top there would be hardly a mention of our tatics. Actually watch the game, its getting so tiresome trying to explain this, if you dont like it then tough.

Thats why it gets so frustrating, they come on here moaning, yet cant seem to understand that there is nothing wrong with our tatics. All these idiots are doing is showing up their lack of understanding of the game OR not watching the game and just reading articles from the all these whining coaches and believing everything they are saying just because its against Wigan....

You do realize how ridiculous you sound there don't you?
You are of course correct about Leeds at Wigan. The reason for that was exactly the reason why Hetherington is saying what he has. Leeds were massively injury hit that day, and therefore stood no chance of competing with Wigan, hence the need to slow the play down at every opportunity.
Slowing the game down is a sign of a poor quality side, not a good side. It is an attempt to even the sides up, and push the rules to the extreme.
Wigan fans obviously have a chip on their shoulder about this and can not see further than their own . When the salary cap was brought in to even up sides you moaned constantly, here you have a couple of teams pushing the rules to even up games and you think all is well.
What you fail to realize his the full statement that Hetherington gave, and have just been childish and took it as personal. Hetherington actually made those comments before the Wigan match on Saturday, not after it. And is main talking point was about the substitutions and having so many is having a negative effect. But the whole interview of course looks better to this reporter to mention Saturday, and he gets the response he wants, form bitter children.

Quick play the balls weren't breaking any rules either, didn't stop you lot crying because Saints were winning trophies
Anyway, we'll see how it all turns out - once every coach just starts doing the same any advantage to any one team will be gone. It will make the game that bit more dull though.

Deny it all you like, but that Leeds team (and the one that got beaten at Saints) was injury plagued. They'd have lost to most sides those two nights.
The Leeds from Saturday is closer to the real Leeds, although it was still missing three genuine game-breakers in Webb/Burrow/Ali and with a half fit Peacock.
They have been the team to beat for 3 years and still are - beating half a Leeds team proves nothing about relative strengths/weaknesses as Saturday and the play-offs will show.

So we were crying about quick play-the-balls as well as crying about Huddersfield and Harlequins slowing the game down.
Do we have to take your word for all this, or are you going to produce some evidence?
And even if you manage to find some, so what?
Since when was it down to the referees, or even the controller of referees, what 'legals' were going to become 'illegals' during the course of a season?
Or do you not care, so long as it's bloody showing Wigan?
There are times when you can be quite a decent poster, but there are others when just you're as soppy a troll as most of the rest.

The playing surface was very poor earlier in the season but is fine now.
Did you really think it resembled a ploughed field on Saturday? It did rain pretty much all day. Was that Hetherington's fault aswell.
You sound bitter and twisted.

Saturday showed that no rules need to be changed to "bloody show Wigan" - you couldn't score a try in 80 minutes and panicked in a big game once more, so you're out of the cup.

I would imagine I'm quite a decent poster when you're winning games, but not when you're particularly tetchy after blowing your biggest chance of silverware in 8 years or so. Chin up.
At least if they do change the rules, you always have the salary cap to blame.

I said poor quality, not poor side. Well done on your wins, but if those wins came with the quality shown on Saturday then paying spectators are sure been short changed.

| In the SOO match last Wednesday 7 penalties were awarded in the match, yet in the Leeds Wigan match played in similar conditions 21 penalties were awarded. To be fair I think the count was pretty even but the point is constant interruption from the referee ruined the game.
What has happened to sides earning good field position through hard work? Now all we see are sides playing to get the penalty. In the SOO match most of the game was played in the middle of the field with attacking chances coming off the back of pieces of skill rather than a penalty, and this is the way it should.
If the answer is to move to two referees then so be it, but as per usual the RFL and most of the clubs are to tight to fund something that really would have an impact on what some people feel are negative aspects of our game. Just like the video referee at all matches should have been implemented but wasn't because of tight @rse chairman at sh/t hole clubs not wanting to fork out the brass to imporve the game.

But hang on a minute, you played pretty much like we did on Saturday, the only difference being you got a try 30 seconds from the end through fatigue to our players.
Should I judge Leeds on that performance to be a boring rudimentary side? Because reading your post it appears as though you've judged us on that one single game to be a poor quality side.

Oh I dunno, you've given me 12 years of chances since you last won the title but I generally manage to resist until a set-your-watch-by Wiganer starts to blame a RFL conspiracy against Wigan, the salary cap, the Headingley pitch, quick play the balls for everything that is wrong with RL. . . . . . everything but a Tomkins fluffed kick or a Gleeson missed tackle - but I guess it's easier to deal with that way.

| Quote ="SaintsFan"So? You always lose to us but you missed beating Wigan by a fumbled try. I can't remember how you lost to Leeds.
My point was that this isn't about defence. It's about slowing the play down. If it was about defence then we'd all be moaning about how Wire play. Except we're not moaning about that because Wire don't slow the play down; they defend well.
=#FF0000It is perfectly possible to have pacey, open, attacking rugby league without lying on in a gang tackle for three hours and yet STILL have good defence. Wire prove it.
Like I said, it's not the defence that people are moaning about. It's the lying on, the slowing down. Hudds did it last year to great effect (and I believe Wigan fans moaned about it as much as anyone else last season) and this year Wigan are doing it. They aren't doing it down under this season because the two refs have ensured a quicker PTB, so using Oz as justification doesn't wash this season.'"
OK. I just need to pull you up on this point.
Since all the whining started about "how long Wigan lie on for", I started a little (completely unscientific) study.
What I do is this:
As soon as the man carrying the ball is GROUNDED (i.e. The tackle is actually completed), I start counting.
Oddly, I very rarely get past 3 seconds before all Wigan's tacklers release.
Strangely, when I do the same for the opposition, I usually find myself getting to 4 or even 5 seconds REGULARLY, before they release.
However, Wigan are penalised far more by the referees for the PERCEIVED offense of "lying on".
This proves to me (in my own head only of course) that the referees are listening to people like Kear and now Hetherington and are trying to allay their "fears" by showing that they are (wrongly) penalising Wigan more heavily.
The vast majority of our grappling/wrestling is done in the STANDING position, BEFORE the tackle is completed, in order to force the man to the ground in a position that is advantageous to US.
There is NOTHING wrong with that, as until the referee calls "Held", we can maneouvre the man in the tackle as much as we want (within the rules).
IMO - Cummings needs to be having a word with his so called "Professional" referees and admonishing them for both listening and kowtowing to the officials that shout the loudest.
They should be above outside influence, but as we see week in, week out, they just can't help themselves.
