I’ve just heard we’re after Danny Richardson! Don’t shoot the messenger but if that’s true it suggests we’ve lost Williams to Warrington. Oh I really hope not!!

Not sure which is worse. Not signing Williams or signing Richardson.

I think the longer we hear no news on the positive front re Williams then unfortunately I think he will end up at Wire. I spoke to guy yesterday connected to Warrington and he was stating that Williams had signed for Wire on a massive annual contract.

I've beaten the drum for years for a decent kicker but geeze Richardson has never entered my thought process.

That would be unbelievably depressing.

I can't see it happening mainly because how bad his defence is and that just wouldn't cut it at Wigan.

I would genuinly start to lose interest in the club if we start signing players like Richardson

Next year assuming TL retires that would leave us with only 2 halves in the squad.

If we could get Richardson or someone like him on a contract that works for us would it be such a bad thing?

We need a backup half signing in the squad for next year. If it were Richardson I wouldn’t be too put out or maybe someone Joe Mellor.

Aren’t Danny Richardson and Harry Smith related? (Or have I dreamt that simply because they’re from Widnes?) If you had a proper pack for them to play on the back of then they’d have their good spells but defensively it could be a nightmare and on the back of this pack, it could be an absolute disaster some weeks.

Cousins I believe, didn't they play for England Knights together? I'm sure it was mentioned then.

Guess Wire have given up on Trueman then …. could throw the transfer fee to GW, assuming getting under the cap somehow?!?!

After my initial surprise, and having given it some thought, I agree with this. Richardson is a good rugby player who can kick the leather off a ball. His defence isn’t great and plenty to work on but even if we sign Williams, we’re still very light in that area. Smith and GW would probably be our first choice but we can’t expect them both to play every week and Richardson could be a good option to rotate or cover injuries. We might even land a 40/20 one day!!

We’re surely talking of Williams or Richardson though and not both.

We don’t need both but Richardson instead of Williams would be one hell of a step down.

I really doubt Wigan are daft enough to bring in Richardson as a replacement for Hastings. We'd be better going with Smith and Field next year.

Whether we sign Williams or not I don't think we can count on anything with regard to either the ability (not every good NRL player does well in SL), suitability as a half or fitness of Jai Field for next year. To do so would be a particularly risky approach if we don't sign Williams. Field got injured with pretty much the first touch he had on debut so we didn't see him play and can't just assume he would be able to play well as a half in SL. Not trying to be too negative but we can't even be sure if he will get over the bad injury he suffered at this stage.

Absolutely no chance that we are signing Richardson as backup. Makes no sense for him when he could start elsewhere, and makes no sense for us to tie up so much of our cap space in a reserve.

Field was signed to play in the halves and Powell can cover too, we would be well overstocked in the halves with Williams,Smith,Field and Richardson too. In a salary cap sport that’s bad salary management. Also my guess is Richardson is on a big wage and the reason Cas want rid of him early, he’s not going to want to join a club and take a big pay cut.
I always thought Richardson would be a good partner for Williams but he doesn’t seem to have improved much since he burst on the scene, he does however posses 2 attributes that we lack, goal kicking and kicking out of hand, that said he would be a big no from me.

He cannot defend at all. Saints didn’t want him, Cas didn’t want him. Maybe a Hull Kr/Salford will take him before heading to the lower grade.

He’ll be a good player in the championship imo.

Thornley, Gelling, Richardson and Mason. Good lord and people wonder why fans don’t want to return. Might as well call ourselves the new Leeds and have done with it. I’m amazed people are for it. Amazed. Tie up the cap with a player we don’t need, or want, and is not even good enough. He can’t defend for toffee and is a poor attacker. I’m lost at what some are seeing in him. And those aforementioned players in total honesty.

A bit unfair. Leeds have some good young players.

Not sure if anybody has seen it but GW has updated his SM cover photo with a pic of him in a Wigan shirt with Gildart and Sutton holding the SL trophy. Hopefully a hint!!

I'd love to think so, except that Oli and Sutty are definitely not going to be wearing Wigan shirts next year ... so perhaps we're just being hopeful.

Somebody on the other forum mentioned that but then Williams very quickly changed it to a picture of him playing for England, so impossible to tell if that’s a positive sign or not.
