Not that Richie will find himself being courted by any union teams in the near future, but that attitude from our players sums up the problem we have in our sport. If that's the attitude of players if makes you wonder what the point is?'"
Makes you wonder if it is just down to money. I really do think that RL players have no interest in actually playing Union. It all comes down to $$$
Is Wigan now just seen as a feeder club to english Rugby Union these days??

Of course it does. Sam and Joel have already won everything they can for Wigan, the next step up without leaving the country is unfortunately Union, and with that comes a ridiculous amount of money.

Of course it's the money. Do you think any genuine RL players would move to Union if they were offered the same wages they're on in SL right now?

| A superb post on the Saints site from Mugwump. I never thought I would agree with any of his posts, but fair play to him.
Quote ="Mugwump"I hardly think the Sunday Times is likely to include half-a-dozen league players in a list of promising players destined for the England RU side. It would be an embarrassment to the sport. As for them being put-off by recent signings - not likely. They had their fingers burned handing Farrell a gargantuan contract when he was a year either side of being shot. It didn't take them long to rectify the error. It takes time for any player to acclimatize to a new sport, which is why they (England RU - NOT the clubs) are now going exclusively for players age 19-22.
You've listed most of England's major targets over the past ten years. It should be said that just about all of them have been successful in some shape or form at club level and they (along with Henry Paul and other players from further back) warranted inclusion to the national team. Given the difficulties involved with switching to a foreign sport I'd say that's an excellent return which rather than putting them off league players is more than likely to further cement their desirability.
I think you're underestimating England's desperation for success and the colossal reserves of money these guys have at their disposal. The former (in the wake of England's crushing exit from the RWC) is now reaching unheard of levels and they will think nothing of blowing the best part of half a million on two or three players who stand no more than a modest chance of making the grade.
We can't use past history as a guide on this occasion as there is no precedent for where the RFU is going. They are getting stronger (financed by any number of international revenue streams) whilst League is mired in one of the worst hit regions of the worst hit nations in depression.
Even worse, the NRL is now so awash with money it can afford not only to tempt the best of the best SL players but those on the tier below. The extra cash in their system means we're struggling now to attract their third tier stars.'"

| Quote ="DaveO"If I were your boss and you had signed a contract with me that said five years and you asked to leave after one year you would not be going anywhere. You could bleat all day about how much more you had been offered but it would be tough luck. I would not be doing this out of spite either but to send the message to all my players you can't just walk away as soon as a better offer comes along. I would see this as protecting my clubs interests and if you went into a sulk and refused to play I'd put you on gardening leave on principle. The fact you put your body on the line over the last few years would have nothing to do with it. You contracted to do that for another four years and so you should get on with it.
There is nothing unfair about any of that.
And yes contracts can be enforced as Spurs have done with one of their players.'"
Utterly ridiculous statement. As I have said on many occasions, how on earth are you going to force a player to play? Or will you be happy to pay a chunk of the CC as he sits in the stands?

| Gonna be cracking day on here tomorrow. Glued to RLFans and Twitter for news from the shareholders meeting, and then from 2pm on wards it's press conference time. Anyone know whether SkySports News will be covering the press conference live?
You heard anything about all this, Rogues? Your someone who usually has their ear close to the ground for stuff like this.

We only need to look at the situation Man City are in with Tevez, a unhappy player in mid-contract.

If hes on 80k per year with 4 years left im sure it would be closer to 500k at least imo. Maybe we are sneakily reporting lower fee so we dont get ripped off when buying new players?

Different argument, Joel committed the main part of his career to Wigan. The disruption his loss causes is worth more than the sum of his contract.
I get what you're saying, but its not enough.

| If JT's only on 80k a year the club will struggle to argue they'd suffer a big loss if he left. Don't forget in terms of losses that if he left the club would save having to pay out 320k over 4 years. How much would him leaving really cost Wigan? Any court looking at the issue would be unlikely to conclude that a relatively poorly paid professional sportsman leaving could really harm Wigan that much. The SC may artificially depress player salaries but the RL clubs can't have their cake and eat it by claiming that if a player leaves for union they will suffer a big loss - if RL players are cheap to hire because of the SC then RL clubs can't have big losses if they go elsewhere.
Looks like the sting in the tail in this sorry saga will be that the SC will prevent the RL clubs from even getting a decent pay-off from the union clubs, because the RL clubs have driven salaries down to such a low level. (They're down well over 30% in real terms from when the cap was brought in.)
It would be amusing if it weren't a tragedy for the sport.

| This is tragic news for RL. Joel Tomkins is a very talented player, but that's not the killer blow. The sucker punch is the fact it is now becoming a trend. We're being drained of our best talent to both NRL and Union - Sam Burgess, Gareth Ellis, James Graham, Joel Tomkins, Kyle Eastmond and youngsters who will never play first grade RL like Ian Thornley and Owen Farrell.
Reading these boards I'm infuriated and perplexed with posters saying "we'll produce more" or "we did it to Rugby Union" and other such fatuous nonsense. I don't want to see the best players leave RL. I want to see Sonny Bill Williams, I want to see Kyle Eastmond, I want to see Joel Tomkins, I want to see Chris Ashton, I want to see players like Ian Thornley develop in League. I want to see Owen Farrell play RL. I also want to see Sam Burgess, Gareth Ellis and James Graham in Super League. This is my competition. I invest my money to watch a product that is declining in standards - dramatically.
RL in this country has some serious issues. Massive issues. The RFL need a big kick up the backside and should wake up and smell the coffee. We don't have the money to keep these players in League and compete with the wages that Union/NRL can offer and we need to address that. However that may be. If that means lowering the number of teams to have a better spread of talent/money then so be it.
How long before Sam Tomkins goes? How long before Jonny Lomax? Josh Charnley? Ben Jones Bishop? Lee Mossop? Tom Briscoe? All these players I predict will leave for the NRL or Rugby Union.
Disillusioned with the sport. Big time. All our best talent are leaving the competition, but who gives one when I can see Wakefield's new signing in Ben Cockayne? Or Matty Ashurst signing for Salford? Or Hull FC's new signing Tony Martin?
Yes I'm ragged off, but that's because I love this sport. It's the best sport in the world. Rugby Union is absolute crap in comparison, but our game is sadly run by absolute morons.
I hate the RFL.
