| 400k a year? Take the money and run Joel.
No Rugby League player in England would ever come close to earning that.
Hes won every domestic trophy with Wigan already and he has the chance to go to Rugby Union and have a 10 year career earning that. 4 million pounds. Wow.

| Quote ="XBrettKennyX"Is anyone surprised? I certainly am not. RL is becoming a second rate sport at an alarming rate, and I place the fault at the "cloth cap and whippet brigade" who think that this is absolutely fine as long as the game between Wakefield and Castleford is a "competitive" one.
The CC is ruining the sport. Whilst we may not be able to compete with the levels of money on offer for every player, clubs should at least be given the chance to compete for their top players.
I would be staggered to see Sam in a Wigan shirt in 2013. Can you imagine the conversations as Joel drives up to Wigan for Xmas in his £100,000 car and talks of how much easier it is to earn lot's more money in London?
The only "slight" issue around Sam switching to RU is his position. I'm not sure where they would play him. Certainly not Full Back, - his running from deep will be frowned upon in favour of kicking the ball out.
Perhaps Scrum Half. In which case the transition will be harder as it's a more technical position. Better for his sake to go earlier rather than later.'"
You and i disagree on other matters, but i agree 100% with this post.

| Quote ="Robbo"If rumours are true about the suggested £400k salary compared to the £80k he is currently on I think he would be silly to turn it down. He's played for Wigan, he's won a SL and CC. At the end of the day he is a professional rugby player. I love my job but if another place offered me a 5 times raise in salary. I wouldn't be hanging about. And who's to say he can't one day return to Rugby League as a big profile player after he's had a good payday. Rugby league players have short careers and I think if anyone held it against him for taking a massive pay rise it would be a bit unfair. Over the past few years he has put his body on the line for this club and can now earn a lot more doing the same elsewhere. I'd rather him stay. he's a great player but who are we to moan and try and hold him back. Good luck to him I say.'"
If I were your boss and you had signed a contract with me that said five years and you asked to leave after one year you would not be going anywhere. You could bleat all day about how much more you had been offered but it would be tough luck. I would not be doing this out of spite either but to send the message to all my players you can't just walk away as soon as a better offer comes along. I would see this as protecting my clubs interests and if you went into a sulk and refused to play I'd put you on gardening leave on principle. The fact you put your body on the line over the last few years would have nothing to do with it. You contracted to do that for another four years and so you should get on with it.
There is nothing unfair about any of that.
And yes contracts can be enforced as Spurs have done with one of their players.

Whilst I admire your optimism (I really do), the fact remains..the more and more talented young players sculking off to Union from the same few clubs at the top will dilute the squads with more inferior homegrown young players. Yes of course we are loyal to the team, but if I wanted to watch 17 average but hardworking Wiganers I could, every week (St Pats / St Judes...etc), I wouldn't pay £20 to do so though.
I'm sure SKY (who without, we 'as a sport' would be dead in the water) would be thrilled to see such a drop in standards from the top clubs...not!

Not sure this is right Dave.
I agree that Spurs have enforced the contract, but that is in the context of a move in the same sport. Spurs have the player's registration and the football rules mean no other club in world football can select him for their team while he is registered for Spurs. The RFU will not recognise Tomkins' registration with Wigan.
If he did go to say Saracens and breached his contract with Wigan then he (and probably Saracens) would be liable in damages, but those damages would equate only to Wigan's losses. Which would be small beer to Sarries.
The reality therefore is that if Sam wants away IL will have to do a deal.

The difference is Football clubs can afford to have players who fall out of favour or moan about contracts on garden duty...They can quite easily just get someone else in and not have to worry about salary restraints.
If Wigan now turned around and said he's going nowhere and Joel eventually ended up never getting a game they'd be cutting of their own nose to spite their face. Wouldn't really do the club much good long term would it. Yeah they'd be proving a point, but at what cost. I've no doubt Wigan will be compensated financially...

| I wonder if Wigan saw this coming when they handed players five year deals. At least you will get a good transfer fee, unlike Saints who lost Eastmond for free.

The cost of NOT enforcing the contract is the concern. He would only not get a game if he went into a sulk and while that is a small possibility (I don't think he would be as daft as that) it would be a price worth paying for the principle
As to the point someone else made about not being able to enforce contracts across sports I think that if Joel walked out of Wigan and tried to play at Sarries while under contract here it would be quite easy for Wigan to prevent that legally.

| It would be a sad day for Rugby League is Joel was to leave same as Eastmond being converted, the RFL should bring in a Designated Player Rule were certain number of players are exempt from the salary cap other wise our sport will become a breeding ground for the RFU. What ever happened to loyalty Kris Radlinski played for the love of his home town and turned down salaries twice as big as his one at Wigan.

Didn't Wigan in the end give him a much better deal though to keep him here? and if I remember correctly I'm sure the RFL/Great Britain decided to pay towards his wage aswell. It wasn't near what union where offering but still a considerable rise on what he was on at that time.

| I would roll around in my own and then eat it for 400k per year. Playing kick and romp would be a walk in the park for that money. We cant blame Joel if he goes, we need to improve as a sport somehow if we want to keep our stars/future stars.
If he does go though I hope he hates it and does crap as it might put Sam off

Every young lad who has ever picked up a rugby ball in Wigan has dreamed about pulling on the cherry and white jersey and playing for Wigan and I certainly wouldn't leave the greatest job on earth for what ever money was thrown at me. Passion, loyalty and love should always come before money.

That's all well and good, but if you know you have 10 years left to play, for instance, and were offered the chance to set you up financially for yourself and your future family, it'd be a tough decision.
If he goes, I don't blame him. It's a short career and he needs to make the call he thinks is right, so good luck to him.
My issue is with the sport that can't or won't compete with the RFFU.

Judging by the Car Sam Tomkins drives around Wigan I can safely say he doesn't find any problems paying the bills, top Rugby League players are not paid peanuts.

He may be able to pay his bills now, but perhaps not when he's in his late 30s, 40s, 50s etc.
Plus he doesn'thave any kids to worry about now either.

They are in comparison to top Rugby Union players It seems. I really am struggling to see it from the "loyalty" side of things. At the end of day, In life. You look out for No.1!
It's easy to say as a fan oh I'd do anything to play for my hometown club. I'd do it for free etc etc. You probably would, and no doubt enjoy it. And then have a big predicament on your hands when at the age of 32 you retire from doing something you love and have naff all in the bank and can't feed your family. People need to think about this more realistically.
