| Quote ="19 Leagues"Well I think your getting the Ultras confused with another group of fans, this group of fans what you are criticising saying you 'hate' are just trying to create a passionate atmosphere at home games which has been lacking since we moved to the DW, the fact that you're coming on here wrongly criticising what they are doing and accusing them of promoting violence despite all the effort they are putting in is disgraceful. The actual Wigan Rugby League club is involved with these lot, do you really think they would be if everything you are saying is true?'"
yeah i get it, but this group of fans are claiming to be ultras, giving what i now see as a great organization a dubious association

| On a slight change of discussion, as I was heading down the steps after the hooter (to the tune of 'Long after tonight is all over'), it was amazing to see groups of older supporters literally dancing on the terraces and singing the words. One couple I saw (man & wife I assume, in their late 50's) were holding hands, dancing and belting out the words...they were in a world of their own to it. The joy on their faces alone made it so worth while!!!

| Quote ="Jimmy Birts Lives On"Thanks for the comments and constructive criticism. We’ve had similar messages from fans of other clubs up and down the leagues. Fair point about it looking official. That’s something that’s hard to get away from in modern stadia like the DW. The only place you can use tele poles are on the concourse in front of the stand. You need the clubs permission to even set foot on that concourse. You then have the Head Steward for the South Stand who is dead against this. Other difficulties in a ground like the DW is the problem of grouping likeminded fans together. It’s early days so you’ve still got people interested who are season ticket holders in other stands. Over time maybe this’ll change.
There is no way of getting away from the fact that you have to work with the club on some things like flags on top of the gantry and standing on the concourse in front of the stand. Impossible to do those things if you don’t work with them. Other things we haven’t asked permission for and have been rumbled.
Like I say, encouragement, support and constructive criticism received from Saints, Salford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Leyth fans etc as well as fans of football clubs. Only set of fans with an obsession with it are Wire fans and I wonder why that is? All boils down to jealousy and bitterness. If they were doing it I’d say good on em’. It looks good and that reflects better on the sport if it’s seen that its support base is vibrant.
We’ll keep plugging away at it anyway, start to build on the home made stuff and sort some displays out for this season. Displays without scratty ingerlund flags that Umbro give away free during a World Cup.'"
Spot on mate, if there is something we are most definately NOT its official. But its impossible not to work with the club on certain issues, if we had a ground like the Willows we would do other stuff we have discussed and get away with it very easily were as in the DW its impossible to get away with "other stuff" you'd simply be ejected with immediate effect. We should be immensely proud of what we have achieved in the last year in terms of the 30+ gantry flags and all the wavers, completely SELF FUNDED. The away displays we have put up have been brilliant and worth every minute of our time and effort. I wish all these Wire lot that have a pop could see the messages of support and encouragement we have had off people at well respected football clubs around europe and how impressed people have been with what we have brought to the RL table in terms of vibrant support.

I think you need to settle on a name pretty quickly. The Ultras name does conjure up images of European soccer violence to the uneducated, but if the majority are uneducated about it then their's nothing you can do about it. I personally like the Irregurlars name but I think the skull needs to go for the same reasons as the Ultras name.
The Brigantes is a great idea but I do think it's something that needs to be sorted soon before you go down the road of scarves, T-shirts, hoodies etc...

Mate, the UK Ultras scene is all about trying to create some colour and passion on the terraces. Nothing at all to do with violence. Check out Stanley Ultras (Accy Stanley), Jorvik Reds (York City) and what's going on with this scene at places like Crystal Palace and Oxford United for example. It looks great and all adds to the experience on matchday.
It doesn't matter what we use as a name. Irregulars, Brigantes, Ultras. A group of fans want to replicate at Wigan what is going on at some of the clubs mentioned above. That's it.

Come down to the next meeting and air your concerns, you'll be made most welcome. We do encourage constructive criticism.
I can't understand why it is only the Wire fans (and just a few of them) who don't appear to be in tune with what we are doing. As someone else has posted I would love too see the other clubs do something similar, and would applaud them for doing it.

Good point. If its to be Brigantes, what about the image? A lion (reference to our crest?) and 3 stars?

| As Chris has said, the UK Ultras scene is nothing like Eastern Europe and Italy, just put in on youtube Stanley ultras or York nomads and you'll soon see that they are not hooligans, just people who reflect their passionate support for a club in a vibrant manner.

There is talk of the Red Ultras making a come back at Aberdeen too, they recently launched a campaign for support. I used to talk to some of the guys involved and they helped us out with a few things when we were going. One of them even got me an invite on to the Curva Sud with the Brigate Rossonere for the Milan derby in 2005. Great guys.

That's good to hear. They did 10 good years and put on some crackin displays. Best in Britain by a mile I'd say at the time.

| Forget what the Ultras scene is like anywhere else, just get down to a meeting and meet the people who organise the flags. Most of them couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag nevermind fight a rugby match
I was never fan of the term 'ultra' or 'irregular' because of the connections people make with those names but the people who organise it can call themselves what they like. I think something more Wigan related would be better though. Also it's better to be original than take another name.
I urge you guys not to be discourage by anything said! Don't stop it at home games, it's too good an idea for the whole south stand to not buy into it.
We should definantly make a mess with the confetti and bog roll at wire though!

Quality, not saying there is anything wrong with Irregulars but it is rather scouse..... hmmmm....
Already been a banner made with irregulars on but it still adds colour in the ground so nothing wrong with that....
In terms of a name I think the rest of the fans would really buy into something Wigan related, this is the way it works. If the ultras tag is left alone and the name is just something everyone will recognise then the opportunity to get new people in will grow faster and faster.
MattyB said about those two old people dancing to the tune! I love that.... if they knew it was you guys who made that happen and then heard your Wigan related name then they would be all for the flags etc.
As an example of the sort of blokes these guys are, look at Jimmy Birts responce all through this thread guys! Open to anything people have to say! Not a 17 year old violent chav who has had his flags taken from him. These are proper rugby league fans trying to make something happen! Lets buy into it!
