Quote As the historic scholarship tour of Australia entered its second week and with one victory already under their belts, giantsrl.com caught up with the traveling party as they gave us an insight into the tour to date.
Player Performance Manager Peter Riding and Scholarship Coach Paul Carlos have played an important role in ensuring the trip went ahead and are overseeing the talented youngsters as they prepare for their second fixture against Balmain Tigers at the famous Leichardt Oval ground.
The pair described the high spirits that exist in the group, especially after their stunning 46-6 victory over a Central Coast representative side;
“When we arrived in Forster prior to our first fixture this week we were treated to a local tour and the sight of the surf which was breathtaking. The weather was less than kind to us, although we were able to cruise the neighbouring lake and view the dolphins which was stunning. Our final training session was at the Harry Elliot Oval and the boys delivered a great session which filled everyone with confidence.
“Going into the game you could hear the large Aussie crowd who were watching in anticipation of what they thought would be an easy Australian victory as they were the current NSW Country champions and included a large number of players already contracted to NRL clubs. We were delighted to get the result and produce a strong performance.
“After some free time the players were required to take part in some TV and press interviews with the local station MBN & Prime and the result created plenty of interest in us as a group. The day after the game, the lads made use of the Tuncurry rock pool, where breakfast was again provided by our fantastic hosts. All the boys were allowed a sleep in on the back of the successful result, the main reason being to keep the team fresh following long travel periods.
“Ahead of the Balmain game we were very fortunate to be invited to attend the South Sydney Rabbitohs v St George Illawarra Dragons NRL fixture at the ANZ Stadium and we were presented to the crowd prior to kick off. The boys and staff are now eagerly awaiting tomorrows challenge against the Balmain side!”
