me and my mates were remembering the seventies when a collection was made at hilton park by four people walking round the pitch each holding the corner of a blanket.
the crowd would then throw their donations from the terraces.
those people used to get hit with so many coins.

also used to be a load of young kids following them to see what coins they could snaffle that missed the blanket

can you imagine the health and safety allowing that now

I remember a mate of mine hitting this poor lad clean in the face with a coin at Oldham's old Watersheddings ground.
Week after a collection was made for the victims of the blanket collectors

I remember back in the 60,s early 70,s when they use to come round
with the blanket when they got to the Railway End we use to lob owt we could get our hands on to try and knock someones yed off usually
coppers hats.. When i think back what we where like as teenagers
watching Leyth we where totally bonkers Al Rowleys brother Don my mate was really nuts aye them Railway Enders mad people..

These lads worked all week, often played 2 games in a week and played for the full 80mins with just 10mins for half time.
Todays SL props don't have jobs, they play 15mins then have a break for anything between 30 & 60mins before doing another short spell - that's it for the week

I'd forgotten that, it's amazing how normally tight fisted speccies would contribute, particularly when confronted by Stan Owen with a tin

just to change tack for a minute what about Brian Ward who used to come round at half time with that board with the half time draw number written on it, he was alright till he got to the railway end where he suffered much abuse and a hail of missiles, he would hide behind the board occasionally peeping out from behind to shout "dont throw that I know wheer tha lives I know thee dad, i'll get thee after"and various other phrases,an absolute hero is Brian, never misses a match,I have heard him at Swinton and Widnes this season quietly

advising him where he has gone wrong the referee that is

the winners on the ground.........wasn't that his catchphrase?

Can be heard 3 blocks away in the North Stand these days
