'Penguins Stopped Play' by Harry Thompson.

Fantastic read about a real life amateur cricket team and their many jaunts around the world....Superbly written, very funny and, at the end, very moving.

Don't be put off by the cricket angle, its generally a story about sports loving blokes and what they'll do for the love of their game.

Also, if you don't shed a tear at the end, you must have a heart of stone.

thats really is a tremendous read... even if someone doesnt like cricket they will love that book.... i had no idea at the time how it was going to go like that near the end... loads of laugh out loud moments.

In the military context, Vince Bramley has written 2 or 3 great books about The Falklands War. "Two Sides of Hell" is a belter, and brings home the full horror of soldiering from both points of view.

brilliant, also on the radio on radio 4 extra (DAB) at the moment! very funny.

I've also read gazza's, Barrie macs and also bobby robsons and all good reads.

Correctamundo - fantastic book, read it on holiday a couple of years back.

John Daly - Letting the big dog eat

Finished this book last night, after borrowing it from the library (I'm FAR too tight to buy it) on the recommendation of Eddie, Slim, Morleys and Dita's......go and borrow it/buy it....a very good read.

At times, it's like a travel guide, at times it's like a diary, at times (tho not very often) it's a sports book, and for a while, it's like Watchdog, saying NEVER book your holiday's flights through British Airways.

An unstinting show of one man's love for his favourite sport and his mates.

I had an idea on how the book was going to end, as I already knew of the situation with the author, but the other issue was really a bolt from the blue!

Magnus Mills - The Restraint of Beasts

Best military book I have read was 'The Forgotten Highlander' by Alastair Urquhart. Makes you realise how easy we all have it, details his capture and his treatment by the Japanese in WWII. There was a programme on C5 about it last week. Stunning story of human endurance, heroism and courage.

I can't believe nobody has recommended 'Standing Tall: The Tawera Nikau Story'

Sarah Palin - Going Rogue.



Also for other politicos, A book called 'O' by an Anonymous person in the White House is a good read.

Long's book is a good read if you can ignore the spelling mishtakes.

Also, this will make some on here vomit but Gary Neville's is very good so far.

Lots of books been read on here on all different rugby players no one mentions Simply Rad suppose to be a good book..

Read Andy Gregs book some 10 years ago (Pint Size) a great read if you can still get hold of it..

Couldn't handle the 'I'm Jack the Lad' slant of Long's. Red is indeed a very good read, so far.

Penguins Stopped Play is probably my favourite sport-based book ever. The only downside is that pillock Giles Coren still occasionally references the fact he was part of a team that beat a national cricket XI in his tedious Times columns.

I know you've said biography, but Briers is in the middle of writing his Autobigoraphy and will be out next year. I'll look forward to that.

Bear grylls mud sweat and tears is a brilliant read, i would definitely recommend that!

Simon Hughes's (The Analyst) 3 cricket books are enjoyable, certainly a cut above most sports biogs.

Just finished reading Gary Neville's RED which wa quite good. Roy Keanes, Gazza'a is absolutely hilarious and Robby Savages "Savage" is a good 'un too.

One not to bother with is Beckhams, too sugery and scared of bad-mouthing everyone.

Jonny 'mad dog' Adair's autobiography is a cracking read
