| Interesting story on the Beeb website about London Welsh not being allowed promotion to the top tier due to not having primacy of tenure at their ground. Apparently one of the RFU rules or league rules is that the club must have primacy of tenure to play in the Premiership.
I'd imagine then that this comment further supports the view that Sale do indeed now have primacy of tenure at COSS.
Sorry to bring up the old Sale at the stadium argument again, just thought it was intersting that this seems to be a set rule in RU to play in the top division.

| Might be splitting hairs, but I think I'm right in this... Primacy of Tenure is for PROMOTION to the premiership. Clubs already in the RU top flight are exempt due to the fact that this was brought in after the league was established, and they couldn't demote clubs for not having it. Saracens and Wasps teams both groundshare with football clubs who own the ground, so no Primacy of Tenure, and London Irish share with Reading who just got promoted to the premier league.

| Correct. Primacy of Tenure is a provsion of promotion into RU Club Rugby premiership, but existing clubs were waived that issue , would only be an issue if Sale were relegated...and had to be re-elected.

| Thanks for clarifying. My knowledge of RU is very limited! Seems a very harsh ruling to deny promotion based on something which it's current teams don't have to abide by - You sure the RFL aern't secretly running the Aviva Premiership?

| We did have a similar rule in RL. I think the idea is to stop clubs from spending all their mOney on players rather than infrastructure and then arranging a short term rental when they finish top.

That may have something to do with it, but I suspect that the primacy of tenure clause is there to make sure they can play games according to TV schedules primarily.

| Presume this rule would prevent Leeds Tykes from gaining promotion back to the top tier.

| Maybe not as they are owned by the same company that owns Leeds Rhinos.

| Quote ="Chico"Maybe not as they are owned by the same company that owns Leeds Rhinos.'" Hetherington did claim for this purpose that Leeds Tykes had primacy of tenure There has never been an instance of this actually being enforced - indeed quite the reverse, RU games have been moved several times when Sky have needed to show Leeds RL games. However clearly this little white lie is possible when you have a single management team. Sale are a different proposition entirely; presumably Salford were smart enough, as the anchor tenants, to build in a primacy of tenure clause into their stadium agreement? ....
