Is French a 'legendary' commentator for being a truly great one, up there with yer Benaud's and the like, or is it just having done the job for so long?

The problem with Ray French, who is a fine bloke and fine RL journo, was he was no longer up to the live commentary job, and his delivery had become often annoying and sometimes farcical.
The problem with Davies (apart from being years out of touch) is that his whiny delivery is like a cross between Mr "You don'wanna'do'it'like'that" Harry Enfield and a 5 year old who's had his bike pinched.
