| Quote ="The Glorious League Freak"Can we all stop saying how everyone else's posts are ironic...
Look, right now Rugby League in Australia is in a bit of a tough position because of how the game is run.
The NRL (Meaning the 16 team competition and Toyota Cup) is owned by the ARL and News Ltd.
News Ltd is also the games biggest media partner (Conflict of interest!).
Meanwhile the ARL is a shambolic organization of blazer wearers who do nothing positive at all.
The NSWRL hold the power in the ARL. The QRL however are trying to get that power.
Meanwhile the NRL can't really make concrete decisions on...well...anything because the are just an administration set on running the 16 team competition.
Plans for expansion....that all is ARL/News Ltd.
Confused yet?
I don't mince words when it comes to where the game is going, but I have to say, the NRL is in rude health.
Crowds and TV figures are up.
The under 20's competition has made other sports crap themselves at how it draw in so many talented athletes who can pick many different sports but enter this televised, high profile feeder competition.
The game overall in Queensland is just booming. They could handle a team in Brissy and further north easily.
Crowds got much higher after Origin when games started to matter again. Hell even in Sydney games are selling out all over the place.
Facilities are being upgraded which is needed.
The Storm is about to move into an incredible stadium that will boost their attendance.
Its all going in the right direction.
The good news is, there is still room for expansion.
Perth and Adelaide are a must for a national footprint. This will boost the TV money and sponsorships league wide.
Once you have those two teams in place....well now you're looking at exciting possibilities.
New Zealand needs another team. PNG is putting together a bid. I think Brisbane will get a second team.....I actually think we might see a second Victorian side in the competition within the next 15 years.
Other sports?
Well the ARU is screwed.
The A League is expanding, but no teams are anywhere close to breaking even, their new clubs are well under crowd expectations and the momentum for it over all is waning.
The AFL is doing very well and really, over the last 18 months, the NRL and AFL have become so dominant over sport in this country that everything else is struggling to get a look in.
The problem the AFL has is, once they put a second Sydney team and one on the Gold Coast....then what?
You have 18 teams...then say you add Tazzy....and thats pretty much it!
So dont worry about the NRL. yes there are problems, but this game, geez, you couldn't kill it with a baseball bat!'"

| See your problem JB is that you are stupid. Now, I make allowances for this, but when you start to misrepresent the game, I need to step in.
The NRL has blanket coverage of the Eastern Seaboard of Australia. Some marks on the map that are capital cities actually have a population less than areas of other cities that have an NRL team.
For instance Adelaide doesn't have the same population as say the area between Parramatta and Penrith. Or when you take in the combined population from the area of South East Queensland that is serviced by the Broncos and Titans....you see that all but a few of the major population are well catered for by the NRL.
Now lets look at the sports we have in Australia that have any profile.
The AFL does well but in NSW and QLD they have nothing. For a country of just 20 million to not have market share in the first and third biggest media markets is devastating. Thats why they are burning money to even make a ripple.
A league soccer has teams in a few different places, but they get 5,000 to most matches, they are so badly in the red that its just unbelievable, and their profile has dropped like a stone in just 12 months.
Basketball in Australia is just about dead. No Sydney or Brisbane teams....they might as well not exist.
Rugby Union has a grand total of four professional teams, one of which is financially viable, four of which are non factors on the field and two of which (Including their last expansion team) are thinking of relocation.
Cricket, yeah, its played everywhere. But they are lucky to get 100 people to Shield games.
So that leaves the NRL is its dire position.
Saturation coverage across the Eastern Seaboard and with a team in NZ. A marketable sport to overseas buyers, the biggest TV sport in Australia....
Yeah, the NRL is screwed!

| F-ing hell, yet another load of cr*p from LF (who should know better if he IS an Aussie) including the Gold and even Sunshine Coasts in the same list as actual CITIES like Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. There is no such place as "Gold Coast City" or "Sunshine Coast City" - they are amalgamations of a number of smaller towns into a city purely for the purpose of running councils more efficiently. The fact that there aren't even moderately-sized popul;ation centres on the Sunshine Coast will IMO forever preclude a major sporting team moving/being located there.
I'd also suggest that anyone who calls either Perth or Adelaide a 'hole' hasn't actually been to either city -both far, far nicer places to live than Sydney.
The cities which count in terms of media exposure are the state capitals - Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide - and Canberra. Of those, league has NO position in Adelaide or Perth, and just the one team (and very little media presence) in Melbourne. AFL has Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne sewn up, with plans for a second team in Sydney and the new 'Gold Coast' team effectively providing a second competitive team in SE Qld.
RU may be on its uppers a bit at the moment but is probably going to add a franchise in Melbourne - leaving Adelaide the only capital in Aus without a major RU team.
In any event a real test of the games will be the respective deals made for the next round of TV rights - the NRL got far, far less than AFL last time (viewing figures not apparently counting for much) and this was exacerbated by the massive amount of 'contra' revenue from Foxtel (ads for the NRL on Foxtel itself being counted as part of the 'revenue' the NRL receives).
One thing that can't be easily estimated as well is the long-term impact of continuing unsavoury stories emanating from NRL players.
The NRL is doing well this year, and growing crowds is brilliant. But writing off either Union or AFL as 'no threat' would probably be the dumbest move in the history of dumb moves. Luckily Gallop isn't as big a pillock as LF.

the population of the gold coast is now approaching 700,000 and it is now a city.
in terms of media ad dollars, sydney and brisbane make up 70% of total revenues.
union is a joke in australia. AFL is trying hard and still failing to grow in nsw and queensland despite millions being spent
