Let's just say its a good job we weren't allowed to compete in the Yorkshire Cup as well.
It gave them something to polish now and again I suppose.

| I agree with the OP, though. like that game up top on Wigan TV today, 1991 v Wire. There's a hell of a lot of ball movement (OK, a lot of it backwards, from Wire), and also a lot of high-impact collision. And actually, and this is something that helped to draw me in to love the game at that time, despite the odd punch-up, the relative lack of foul play, and the scarcity of whistle-blowing. but of course, refs let a lot go in those days which they would never do in the modern era.

The game could be frantic back then. I just dont buy this idea that the modern game is faster, its not. The question still remains, why are most of todays props so unfit? Most of them are gasping for air after 15/20 minutes. It would be fascinating to see some of the best 90s players play the modern game. I expect they would kill it such have the standards dropped at the top of the league but we have just got used to it as normal.

Hardly surprising is it, when other clubs and councils like St Helens and Warrington had more sense!

You mean like all the parts of your comments that have nothing to do with the OP.
But to keep you happy. Yes we sold the ground and now rent a stadium.... so what?

The most important part to you, the reason was the cost of the new stand that cost millions more than quoted, but don’t let facts get in the way

And won't be struggling through this current economic crisis half as much as Leeds will be due to not owning said ground.

And yet, in the NRL, the likes of JWH play big minutes, old man Gallen played 80 mins usually, and so on and so on.
So yeah, no excuse.

| Wow ,
Uncle Mo was cleverer than i thought , he realized that if the club overspent and had to sell the ground then once it was renting if a Corona virus ever occurred the overheads would not be as great .

The original cost of the new stand was estimated at £1.1 million and Whitbreads were to pay £700,000, but the actual cost was £1.7 million with Whitbreads paying the original estimated cost of £1.1 million with Wigan having to find the balance of £600,000.

I think you will find that Leeds have no worries as the rugby ground is part of the Headingley complex which is owned by the Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Exactly, a town which claims to be the most famous club in rugby league has now ended up in a rented white elephant stadium for which it has to pay £200,000 per year to a Chinese Company.
And you say "so what"

so a 600k loss in them days, thats what hit them hard and they never recovered from thats 1.2 million now, plus Robinson and Whitbread selling the ground although the board voted against it, brown envelope squad

| Its not all regarding the ground is it though as despite all the claims that are made that it was the building of the stand that was the problem , the other major problem was the wages paid to the players that were massive and not sustainable , hence the reason why Leeds nearly went bust buying the best players that were left after you had the elite . Trouble is you guys think that everybody else does not respect everything you won in that era (and you are right ) because there was nobody to compete against you . What it does not take away is the fact that Wigan had world class players who would have been just that in any era.
