| Cutting your academy to save money is about as short sighted as it comes. Total false economy as a well run academy will save you money in the long run.
Hardly surprising it comes from Salford though. Just reinforces to me that the Doctor is in this for the short term.

| Good forward thinking if you ask me. Whats the point of paying to develop players when you can get Championship teams to do it for you.

| Quote ="Bull Mania"Salford set to scrap their U19s. Disgraceful if true. Surely it should be a requirement to run an academy to gain entry to the league. The RFL will just bury their heads in the sand and say "carry-on" '"
I think player development was a requirement along with other off field / community activities under the old system. Looks Like promotion / relegation has put paid to that at Salford. And Yes, the RFL will most likely do as you say.

| How misguided of the Bulls to be developing youngsters at a time when we should be "cutting our cloth".
With all the money at Super League clubs' disposal they should be forced to spend a set percentage of income on youth development or be thrown out of the league, end of.

In the sense of dual reg, no one as of yet. In regards of youngsters from the area its now mainly Huddersfield and Salford since Bradford left the party.

| If you look at the number of players in our first team squad next season that came through our academy we'd be lost without ours.
So too England as a quarter of the current 4 nations squad came through our youth set up - including the captain. A few of those came through during the recent financial meltdowns too.

Apart from Ferres, Whitehead, Bateman, Kopczak and the three Burgess brothers.....we should have cut our cloth. Maybe Addy and Atkins too. Maybe we should think again.

| Back on the subject of Salford's academy - it appears that Marwan Koukash has tonight announced a joint 'Super Academy' set up with Leigh.

And can't season ticket holders for Salford get into Leigh's games for 50% and vice versa?
Interesting idea...

I'd be quite happy with a set up like that for one of the local sides. I can watch pretty much any RL, so getting 50% off another team's games would probably encourage me to watch them sometimes when they weren't clashing. I'm surprised more teams don't do similar really, especially the likes of Salford who don't get many anyway.

| Quite a number of Salford fans claim that the location and difficulty of getting to the ground is one of the main reasons why gates have fallen. If it's really true that local Salford people find it hard to get to then I can't imagine many Leigh fans turning up, to be honest.

Surely that's more of a local thing? The Salford fans used to live near the ground or on a bus route, now it's elsewhere that's no longer the case. If you have a car, the stadium isn't difficult to get to at all. Sure it can take a while getting out of the car park, but it's quite easily accessible. So the location of it doesn't really matter to Leigh fans.

There's regular buses running from Manchester city centre so I don't understand how they can claim it's too difficult to get to home games with public transport. I live in Manchester and still manage to get to Odsal on game day..

Sorry to rain on your parade buddy but .....
it is my understanding & the true belief of every Salford fan who has posted on RLFans that the RFL [i'forced'[/i Salford out of the Willows with the ultimatum that if you do not move to a modern stadia, criteria etc, etc, then you will not have a SL Licence.
This rightly angers Salford fans as they did not do the same to both Wakefield & Castleford.
Edit.
Or London, who haven't had a place to call home for an age & a day.

The way Wakefield constantly conned the RFL with "Oh but we're moving to a new stadium" was bad. The fact the RFL kept falling for it when everyone could see how transparent the lie was, was worse.

| Quote ="Bulliac"I think you'll find the original intention, as stated, was to prevent clubs going bust... and prevent Wigan winning everything, every year. It was a long time ago, of course, and there was also the odd bit of 'mission creep' along the way, IIRC'"
As Eric Morecambe would have said "All the right words but not necessarily in the right order". The salary cap was introduced to stop Wigan going bust when they didn't win everything. They were definitely in queer street the year Salford knocked them out of the cup having already budgeted for their annual trip to Wembley. Then along came Tesco, well, "Every little helps" as they say.
