Very sad.
Just out of interest would anybody else be able to get time off if a mate died.
I know I couldnt.

Course you could. People always talk their employers up as demons, but if you actually approached them with a problem they will always be receptive. You might not get paid during the time off mind. All companies with any chance of existing long term will have contingency plans for a single employee. I remember that crazy law firm worker who was on here who claimed they wouldn't be allowed to go to the birth of their child.

As it's a very sad occasion then I won't make the obvious Singapore parachute jibe.

It's always difficult when someone close passes away.

A few years before I retired, my dad took ill with a brain tuma. One day he collapsed and we knew the end was near.

I rang my boss to explain the situation and he said to stay at home and do as much work as was possible.

Dad died 10 days later, and I had to arrange the funeral etc. I was off work in total for around three weeks.

My company got more than those three weeks back off me, I made sure of it, because of the way I was treated.

Thats my theory and it works

I always think if you treat your staff right as a manager you get it back tenfold. Respect to saints for being a caring employer I say.

Nor could I. In fact, if a parent/other loved one died, they would give time off but not paid.

Nice of Saints to let Flannery go home like that.

Many companies these days write clauses into employment contracts which allow for compassionate leave. It would be a heartless emplyer that doesn't allow staff time off either paid or unpaid under these cicumstances.

Sad news for lego head indeed. And nice to hear the club let him go back home and deal with his grief and be around the folks he needs to be with.

Everybody seems to be dying lately. Very scary thought.

A work colleague of mine tragicly died today because yesterday she hit her head trying to stop a theif.
