I've had numerous chats over the years over how it is possible for the strorm to have the quality of players they have under a restricted cap.

Can't see any SL clubs picking up any of the All-Star backs or Cam Smith as they won't want to give up Origin or Test shirts.

Think plenty will be after the likes of Adam Blair, Jeff Lima and Sika Manu as generally the Kiwi players have given better value over the years.

Makes you wonder how many Super League sides are also doing this. Given the general incompetence of the RFL it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Tarnishing their reputation!! are you mad? it's obvious those blokes will have been at the top of the list with 2 contracts and taking bungs! The nrl have copped out! The players who went along with it should banned but the powers that be are too afraid of losing it's marque players to sl , AFL or union!

I would imagine very few! as has already been hinted at club officals, owners accountents, players may well see jail time for this. This is massive and only the first story out of the club! I'm sure the Aussie inland revenue and fraud office will be seeing a few people. not many in the game in the nrl or sl are this stupid/brave/corrupt.

It's interesting that all the grief is being aimed at the management when presumably the players knew they were getting off the record money. I don't see how the players could have been unaware of what was going on so they are complicit yet seem not to have been punished.

I've not read any reports but my only guess at how any players could be innocent would be if the board told each player to keep their salary details to themselves and make a few of them think they are the highest earner at the club.

No, the players apparently all had two contracts. One for the cap auditors and one for the 'other file'.

Wouldn't the other contract be illegal? so how could it be a contract?

God knows, I'm just going off the articles I've read. I'm sure it'll all come out in the fallout.

It states there were contracts at the club offices and different contracts to reflect the higher payments that were actually made to them which were kept at the CEO's house.

The only way I could conceivably see the likes of Slater, Inglis or Smith coming over to SL is if they feel the need to escape the limelight a la Jamie Lyon. But then they could just as easily do that in French RU for twice the cash.

Shame the RFL didn't have the balls to hand out such punishments as those in charge an the NRL.

The overspends by winning teams in SL haven't been anything like as enormous, persistent or deliberately underhand. There is no comparison.

Are there any tax implications regarding this? If the players have been paid, on the quiet are they paying tax on it?

A Jeff Lima or Adam Blair is somethign we need at saints more than ever.
We don't need Cam Smith as we already have two good hookers in Roby and Moore.
Inglis probably wonn't leave or he will go for another NRL club in the spotlight,
Slater will do the same.

The players will move around the NRL rather than anywhere else i think

and just for the record cam smith is so much better than moor and roby it's silly he is arguably the best player in the world! ever team in rugby would dream of a player like smith. can't agree that saints don't need a player of that class. saints like Leeds and are hardley blessed with genuine world class talent let alone one of the modern greats.

It's much easier to hand that kind of punishment out when there is no relegation.

yes he did he said we don't need can smith as was have roby and moor. I see that you have to hookers. but if cam smith was available to saints I find it unrealistic you would turn him down! you don't need a hooker I understand that but ever team needs a cam smith! I suggest if smith was available to saints roby or moor would be playing in a new position or club.

That sort of decision making could come straight out of the Mo Lindsay guide to player recruitment!! It would be farcical to buy a player simply because he was available, particularly when the squad has major holes in other areas, such as centre and prop. Regardless of how good Smith is, a club has to look at the wider picture, our need for a hooker is way down the list of priorities.

So who do you think that Lindsay bought that Wigan didn't need when they did need strengthening in other positions?
