They seem to know for definite the reasons behind other teams regular season failures to perform all professional but appear somewhat reticent in coming forward with any reasons for Leeds unprofessional regular season performances.

Caveats such as "I think" "suggest" and "probably" not to mention "as risky as drawing conclusions from a small number of observations is" lead you to the conclusion that I was "quite sure" did they?

Not even convinced Nigel Wood was on statistically solid ground with his positive extrapolation after the Good Friday (round 9) results - although it possibly explains why the club he ran could never keep a firm grasp of it's own accounts.

The difference between top and bottom of SL after the opening 9 rounds this year was stated to be a best ever ten points and yet that was the exact same situation at the exact same point last season. In fairness previously there had almost always been at least one misfit team that struggled to get a point on the board all season long let alone in the opening nine rounds such was the vast difference in relative abilities.

There was another comment about the closeness of results. So far this season (again to round 9) I think the average result was a 25-20 home win but not the outright closest seen so far over a full SL season which was 23-22 in 2009. If the comparison was to just the opening nine rounds then again the comment doesn't hold any water as in 2009 it was 23-20.

Was that the game where they took comic relief (or whatever it was) a bit too far?

I'm sure that blowouts happen, its sport but there has to be something more endemically wrong.

It could be the English psyche of winning at all costs not being in the DNA - if I were a Hull KR/Widnes/London player today I would be embarrassed, I doubt they are when their Coach comes out with "not having Big Squads" as a reason for appalling performances by full time pro athletes.

It's a sad state of affairs and can be attributed to England sporting achievement.

In Rugby League these Players and Coaches who fit the above need to be weeded out, if that means a reduction in SL Clubs then so be it, I guarantee we would not have the weekend we have just been subjected too.

I doubt, to be honest, that the coaches in question entirely believe their own sound bites.

UK sport has just had a fantastic year. Just because we're not winning at RL or soccerball doesn't mean we have a loser mentality. Tell our cyclists they have a loser mentality.

Other than that, thinning the numbers seems a rather cheap easy way to rasie quality to me. Wouldn't the longer, harder road top producing more, better players be a better option long term?

No i doubt they are embarrassed, players don't hurt when they get the opportunity to climb back on the horse and when 80% of the League have objectives as lofty as finishing in the top 8 and 10% have the lofty objective of not finishing bottom!!

Olympics performance by a handful of individuals does not make a justification for rising the flag and signing God Save the Queens whilst smoking a cigar.

Individual sports where funding is obtained by preformance achievement is very different to I turn up, i get paid, i go home mentality of 80% of SL players.



How do you intend to do that? Grass roots investment is sunshine and lollipops when the people training youngsters don't know the basics.

I'd prefer to dwell on the first set of results of the weekend where the teams he's probably referring to all got fine results.

Sorry, don't buy that. When I played Sunday football for the princely sum of naff all I was embarrassed by a heavy defeat. There may be a few who don't care but by and large they didn't out-perform thousands of their peers to reach what are still pretty lofty heights of being able to earn their living in the sport by having no competitive spirit.

Very few of those performances were down solely to the attitude of the individuals winning medals. A lot of work by clubs and coaches went into it, lots of it unpaid and lots of it involving instilling winning attitudes in the competitive level of sports that by their nature encourage anyone to participate. Pop down to your local running club for details, particularly if it's one with a junior section.




Your problem is that you think all motivation in sport is provided by money. Simply not true.

In the specific instance you raise, perhaps investing more in making sure the people training the youngsters do know the basics. I assume the youngsters you train are well versed in the basics, so that's a start.

For me, the only thing that affects the credibility of Super League (and I've said this down the pub for ages) is the shocking standard of the refereeing.
