But seeing the Channel 9 team there (yes there was a time when they didn't just take the Sky feed) was even better - they were our real heroes.
Now compare to this coverage from the same game:

or indeed this:

In both cases the British commentary just ruins things but the line [i"somewhere in the background Phil Ford is running around trying to find someone to hit"[/i absolves Stevo from the blame for that.

Oh and Tugger never used to put the ball in did he.

Someone on here is named after an appendage of someone who played in that game and played Jiffy off the park at 6.
Can't believe they replaced Tugger with Cruikshank. Deary me.

Great cover tackle on a flying Brimah Kebbie. Back in the days when as a defender, while it was nice for the opposing player to have the ball in their possession it wasn't always an absolute requirement.

| Is it misty eyed sentimentalism that leads me to believe there was more to enjoy about the game in those days, or was it really played by hard men and skillful players?
DH (with or without the M) was one of my favourite players at the time, and by comparison with some of today's "superstars" he would be very very good indeed.

| Just since Blocker Roach was mentioned....I was listening to Andrew Johns on the radio the other night and he talked about Roach's first team debut. Apparently at the first scrum his opposing prop (some older guy) smacked him in the mouth, at which point Roach started shaking. The guy who hit him asked if he was scared, to which Roach replied "No - I'm excited!".

| Yes I remember it. Hill then went to hide behind Karl Fairbank before pointing the finger at Cliffy telling him all the things he was going to do if he ever caught him. It was hilarious.
Not as funny as Marty Gurr running 40 yards to smack one of the Northern players the year before at the same place mind...

The player in question was Phil Ford, who, after going 80 yards to score, decided to give Gurr a wave as he rounded him.
Marty took this as disrespect.

Harkin and Plange were really going for it. I think's Plange's reach made him the winner. Harkin was swinging plenty, but I don't think he connected with any.

| You'd be tempted to say that the game was just full of thugs back then, but you only have to watch them with the ball to realise they were terrificly skilled rugby players who were also just very hard.
And Dave Heron for me had everything that made RL exciting. He was quick, had a fantastic step and magical hands. Always looked dangerous with the ball and always direct. He was also a phenomenal cover tackler. And of course, he was hard.

Don't forget his Magnum-esque moustache.
All but gone in the game now.
We need to do a moustache XIII. David would, of course, be the loose-forward.

Skerrett piped down quickly enough when Kevin Ward arrived on the scene.

When David "Cement" Gillespie signed for Hunslet, didn't Heron go in Open Rugby saying he wanted to be known as David "Concrete" Heron?

It would be hard to think of a member of the 1982/83 Leeds squad that didn't have one (David Ward had no hair anywhere on his head). Even Roy Powell had one back then.

| John Holmes sported a droopy one in the early 70's and so did Mike Harrision but in those days we all did.
