He is current MOS though
On his day he's a great player I would like him younger but he will be good for the young players at the club like Rhys Evans and Jordan Burke who hopefully will be going for the number 1 spot if they progress after Hodgson has gone.

Only McCarthy and Mitchell
Cooper went to Cas and Penny went to Quins
Harrison and Riley are first team most weeks.
Rhys Williams is a ex union boy but Smith likes him and has given him another contract should see more of him next year.

To be fair he did look it at the time with the tries he was scoring which were amazing he also made the dream team that first season.

| The Hodgson signing is bizarre given Mathers' form both before and since the announcement.
I only wish Leeds could accommodate a return for Richard to Headingley next season.

| Where would you play him tvoc, assuming Jones-Bishop makes a full return to fitness and with Smith also available to play full-back?
At this point in his career I can't see Mathers settling for being a squad player.

Shouldn't really need someone coming in to take your place to make you play better though, but he has been very good recently which is good for us.

IMO we have 3 better full backs than Mathers' already, good luck to him were ever he plays next year.

| Quote ="tvoc"Warrington's play off record over 12 season's is: Played 5, Won 1, Drawn 0, Lost 4. The sequence being L, L, W, L, L. The Win somewhat ironically coming against a Tony Smith coached Leeds at Headingley.
A combination of squad and coach that, as yet, have been unable to register a win of any description against Leeds, St Helens or a Michael Maguire coached Wigan.
Are games that would have helped Warrington claim a place in the Pay-Offs not must win games? That probably explains why Warrington supporters have so often been left to look on from outside the Play-Offs when the genuine contenders are taking centre stage. Compared to Warrington's 5 appearances other permanent SL members, Bradford (23), Leeds (2icon_cool.gif, Wigan (29) and St Helens (30) puts Warrington's achievement in context. As does Castleford's 6 despite suffering two relegations along the way.
If it's any comfort Warrington have played more Play-Off games than the other permanent member London/Harlequins (2) and have enjoyed a slight advantage in average finishing league placing - 7.21 to 7.36'"
Again, we have a crap play off record, as has been raised previously. But, since Smith arrived, he realised our play off chances were slimmer than Lena Zavaroni, so he put all our eggs in one basket, and we went on to win the CC. JOB DONE.
I doubt Smith could have given a damn about the play offs last season, when you look at the sides he was putting out, in order to wrap up key players "in cotton wool".
To bring up some lame stat about our Super League play off record, is a pee poor arguement. SO WHAT. We've had crap sides and average/crap coaches, we're NOW turning the corner.
Yes, since Smith has arrived, we've yet to beat Leeds, Stains and a Maguire led Pies, but so what. YOU DON'T GET ANYMORE POINTS FOR DOING THAT.
And as for the lamebrain that labelled us "flat track bullies" for only beating so called lower sides, does that make Leeds, "flat track faggots", for losing against them?
So tell us again....PRIMA DONNAish....HOW?

Can't see where he'd fit in to a Union side either.
Lacks the pace across the ground to play full-back or wing, not big enough to play in the centres (although if Jonny Hepworth can make a go of it you never know)

| Tony Smith seems to get the best out of Mathers for whatever reason. I'd be a bit wary of re-signing him given that his form under other coaches has been less convincing. Having said that, he was part of an exciting team back in 04.

That's where the 'Leeds being able to accomadate him' bit comes in to play.
I don't think they can while they have Brent Webb under contract for 2011. I see Mathers as being in that similar mould of being a full-back who thinks he's a half-back.
Further to that with Lee Smith returning to Leeds I think Ben Jones-Bishop's chances at Headingley are greatly diminished. I believe Smith's game is more suited to full-back than wing and would expect him to take the number 1 jersey when Webb vacates the position.
Quote ="Wire_85"Shouldn't really need someone coming in to take your place to make you play better though, but he has been very good recently which is good for us.'"
Well you'd be in a better place to judge on that score but from what I'd seen this season I thought Mathers was also in good form before the signing was announced. If you say he was rubbish then I'll have to concede that he was.
