Is it just me that is fed up with the bonus point been awarded to a team losing by 12 points or less? After a full season of it and looking at the league table now and seeing Leigh, Widnes and Barrow all still a point ahead of us anoys me (allthough we have played a game less)

I agree, the bonus point system is only really beneficial to teams that are around the same level, however it almost punishes the top teams. There is no bonus point for winning by a certain margin, ie 40 points.
Also I think the 12 point losing gap is not a fair marker. It should be dropped to 6 points. A team could be played out of the game for 75minutes, be losing 18-0 (4 tries 1 conversion) but a try under the posts in the last minute would get them a bonus point.

Final word, if we keep winning we won't need to worry about the bonus point, let the teams below us concern themselves with the 'loser' point

And if the RFL thought it was that good they'd have introduced it into SL now!

I agree it rewards losing, that isn't sport and can't create a good mental attitude, e.g some teams will now probably go into games looking for a bonus point rather than looking to win.

There is no reward for winning the championship though, you cant go any higher plus the reward for losing every week in super league is staying in super league!

Its just designed to get us all used to the idea

There was no need for a bonus point as points difference is a more accurate measure of performance quality over the season.

How about, if you let a team get within 12 points you loose one point to the opposition ie
Halifax win by 10
Fax get 2 points and loose a point to the opposition!

Is that not the same difference Mal?

Maybe the bonus point should only kick in if the away side gets within 12 points

2 points for a win, 1 for a draw and non for a loss? worked fine for years! A players pride should keep them going when losing not a bonus point.

To be fair though - the bonus point isn't going to affect us this season. Bonus points are only awarded to losers. We don't fall into that category. Bonus points are for other clubs to worry about.

There also maybe a scenario, in the world of eternal cynics, where at the business end of the season, a team could be beating another team by 16 points, yet it maybe advantageous for the winning team to see the team they are beating get a bonus point, so the winning team could get a better run in the playoffs.

Stop wittering on about the bonus point rule, it's a good idea. Eg Barrow deserved something more than nowt last Saturday.

Did St.Helens deserve something in 1987? They ran us so close - maybe we should have snapped a handle off the cup and given it to them.

If I remember rightly we didn't get 3 points either. Excellent idea the bonus rule ... I even reckon it should be modified to take into account WHEN tries are scored. Eg a try in the second minute should be worth more than a try in the 20th minute. (say 5 points as opposed to 4 points?). This will reward teams for starting strongly and punish those who don't. Likewise tries in the last 10 minutes should be worth 5 points. Also conversions for tries scored out wide should be worth 3 points because they're more hard.

I'm sorry - i'm too stupid to take all that on board.


It's a simple game, i'm a simple person - i fear my brain would explode with all that.

But the possibilities are endless, Richard. Just imagine we need 8 points to win the match ... one of our players crosses under the bar in the last minute then makes a bee line for the corner flag in order to qualify for the "3 point conversion". The sport could become "the thinking man's game". Exciting indeed.

Actually Tony - got to admit - that scenario does sound quite exciting but the traditionalists won't have any of it. It's a bit fanciful i fear.
