A belter of a film, with a fantastic central performance from Gene Hackman. Enjoy.

| Quote ="McClennan"Do you know what the French call [iThe Hunger Games[/i? [iBattle Royale[/i with cheese.'"
Having just watched it I'd say it's more a Battle Royale without the meat.
It's by no means a bad film, certainly the teenagers will be flocking to the cinema in droves. In fact if you've never seen Battle Royale you'll probably think it's pretty good like my parents did after watching it last night. If you have though you'll realise that it's a bit a of a rip off of the Japanese film and it lacks the thought provocation and sheer raw brutality that made Battle Royale such a great film.

Certainly is. Hackman is quality, like most of the work he produces. The film was shown regularly on either Film4 or ITV4 last year.

| The excellent 2009 Chinese film 'City of Life and Death' is shown on BBC4 tonight. Centred around the Nanking Massacre during the Sino-Japanese war. It's powerful emotional stuff. Well worth the record button for a rainy day.

Cracking movie ,Shot in black & White I think ? The first time I watched this was on a dodgy dvd a couple of years ago so I'll give this another watch. The story of John Rabe is another good movie along the same lines as this one.

| Yup. Black and white like us Bones. Film was a long time in the making. The Chinese censors fine tooth combed it.

| Wasn't that mad on it myself. It wasn't rubbish but it felt a bit [iSchindler's List[/i when I thought the Chinese might have been a bit more imaginative rather than just do the same thing The Beard did.

Firstly - what sort of studio puts a quarter of a billion dollars into a film in the current climate? I read somewhere recently studios were (wisely) avoiding major gambles and taking safe, relatively inexpensive options rather than huge blockbusters - especially on what is a gamble.
Secondly - why a film based on these books? I read A LOT and love sci-fi novels, and I've never heard of them. '"
Then you can't be much of a sci-fi fan. The John Carter series is regarded as one of the key stages in the development of pulp SF and inspired countless major SF writers such as Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. Books such as "A Princess of Mars" were - in their day - as popular as any SF novel you care to mention over the past fifty years.

Have you seen the French film '5x2' (on C4 tonight) Mc? It's quite interesting although a little heavy at times....It's a film about a couples relationship in reverse. Starts with them getting divorced and works back, through several scenes, ending with their first meeting. I found it rather intriguing.

I wouldn't give it seekability status but worth a gander if you ever bump into it....Watched John Woo's 'Red Cliff' last night. Not usually my bag and still trying to work out whether I enjoyed it or not.

Going to see it tomorrow night. Not normally my sort of thing but the tv trailer looked interesting and I'm a fan of Joss Whedon's stuff.

Ok, so I've not heard of a few books from the 60s.
As it happens, my first sci-fi author was Isaac Asimov (still the benchmark), followed by Arthur C Clarke. Ray Bradbury only a little - never got into him. And remember this was in a time when I couldn't just click Wikipedia and discover who their influences were, this was when I was a kid and abused my library card to read them and whatever I could get my hands on. I've read several ER Burroughs but still never came across the John Carter series that I recall.
I'm also big into Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, Douglas Adams, Ursula LeGuin (her fantasy stuff is also extremely good), Frank Herbert, Frederick Pohl, and more recently Iain 'M' Banks' feckin fantastic Culture series (highly recommended).
So while I may not be up to your mighty and omniscient level, I'm fairly well read cheers even if I'm not a devoted sci-fi geek.
The John Carter film was still a rather major f*ck-up. Partly cos no-one had ever heard of it.

Went to see it last night and really enjoyed it. Thought it was very funny and an interesting concept, although the ending wasn't as much of a shock to me as I thought it would be. About 10 minutes in, I actually thought I had it figured. I thought that *SPOILER* =#FFFFFFthe reveal would be that the thing was a set-up to make horror films for an audience. I thought that the competition with the Japanese mirrored the way the Americans try and emulate everything from the Japanese horror market. *SPOILER*. I wasn't actually that far off the mark given that *SPOILER* =#FFFFFFthe whole idea of 'appeasing the gods' is pretty much a metaphor for satisfying the film-going audience's appetite for these sort of films *SPOILER* At first I thought it was a ridiculous ending, but the more I thought about it and what it symbolises, the more I liked it.

I saw it today and thought it was rather good but not at all scary. That blonde had nice breasts.

| Just on John Carter, just because a book is (or even more so, WAS) big at the time it was released, doesn't mean it's in any way suited to being made into a film. Most Asimov books for example would be dreadfully dull movies. SF short stories/novellas are often far better source material for film. The John Carter books are poor full stop.
