not at all "inexplicable" - several factors come to mind
1) Injuries over the past few years have sidelined him and seriously questioned his fitness
2) Speaking out of turn and losing the favour of TR and LF earlier this season
3) Competition for places which has been healthy for the club
4) Actually believing his own publicity a couple of years back - his head was turned
much more mature nowadays and ready for a new challenge
