| here`s a thought people
(dangerous i know)
should the rfl introduce a automatic match banning system for yellow and red cards
yellow = 1 match
red = 2 match
in an attempt to clean the game up a bit, so far after 26 rounds there have been 30 yellows dished and 3 reds
comments please

| No-the refs copout and put everything on report rather than make a decision as it is. This would only make it worse

| the idea of the 1 and 2 matches is good but no, not automatic as offences to recieve these cards are different and video evidence also needs to be taken into account first if its available.
one of the yellows i disagree with is if some big fugly prop punches someone for no reason and they decide to hit back as most people would its usually a case of them having to walk too.

| The system as it stands is ok. What lets it down is the failure of the RFL to apply it equally to players from all clubs.

2008 yellow = 61 and red = 13
personally i think the lack of cards shown this year is down to the lack of enforcement on the pitch this year.

| it wouldnt work players might want to get a yellow or a red card just so they can miss a game that is coming up ie like playing a hard team or they might need a weekend off so the can get a card to get it i think this happens in football

| The report system is terrible.
If there is an on-field incident that features in the ref's report it should be automatically looked at by the panel.
Sometimes things go on report because a ref hasn't seen them, but a touch judge has, thats a cop out, if the touch judge see's something it should be taken as correct and the player should be punished.
For example last years final eliminator. Lee Smith is seen to kick Carmont?? in the head by Ganson. Ganson blows the penalty and on sky can be heard to say "Stand there!! I saw it and thats unacceptable" He then places the incident on report... Why?! He clearly states he saw it, and he didn't like it why is it not a card?
I'm sure everyone knows of incidents like this, that was just the first example to spring to mind.

Surely not. Not Lee Smith of all players.

| The whole on report thing should be scraped, you can't have a situation where a game doesn't have a big screen for a crucial decision, yet a player from that game can be banned following video referral

| Wouldnt work really, especially for red cards.
Terry Newton breaks sean longs face. Red card 2 match ban
Someone gets a red card for punching someone. No damage done. Red Card 2 match ban.
One is severe and warrants a harsher punishment than the other

| My theory on this is
that if all the punishment is done off the field all hush hush because the RFL know that we are (whether we like it or not) a minority sport it doesn't get reported in the papers.
That way when people watch it on TV (neutrals and casual watchers) it looks like a well behaved sport were everyone respects the ref and no one breaks the rules.
It makes our sport look better in the moment, whether it is true in the long run is another discussion.

Leon Pryce got a yellow card on Friday for a professional foul. Do you think this is worth a 1 match ban?

| 1 match ban for a yellow card is harsh imo.
Say if a player gets pulled up for holding down twise in a row gets yellow carded= 1 match ban. bit harsh i think.

again they are supposed to be professional players and know the rules, and if i`m not mistaken holding down comes under a professional foul catergory, as they are attempting to slow down the play the ball

| No.
IMO bans should only be handed out for Serious violent play, such as Hightackles, Elbows, gouging, chicken wing, late hits to the head and grapples etc.
if there is a scrap and a few punches are thrown then big deal, its a mans game, so lets keep it that way

| The idea of the yellow card is to punish certain types of misdemeanor. To then give a player a ban is to punish the original incident twice. So, no, I don't agree with the OP's first post.
However, to discourage persistent offenders, I would support a points accrual system. Score enough and you get an automatic 1 match ban.

| Don't the Australians operate a points system as far as disciplinary goes?
Something along those lines would work here. Different offences carry different points penalties. As your points add up so does the likelyhood of a ban. When a player reaches 100 points he receives an automatic 1 match. 200 points - two matches, 300 - three matches etc.
Over several games player A could be hit with 25 points for backchat, 50 points for a professional foul and then another 50 points for a professional foul. He is now on 125 points and receives an automatic one game and is only 75 points away from his next ban which would be 2 games.
Player B deliberately targets the opposition scrum half with a late elbow to the jaw. The judiciary hand out a 350 point penalty meaning player B receives a 6 game ban (1 [ifor the first 100 [/i+ 2 [ifor the second[/i + 3 [ifor the third[/i) and is only 50 points away from his next (4 game) ban.
Could even extend the system to a team level too. If/when team A make it to 2,000 points (for example) they could be deducted 1 league point, and then a further point for each 100 over the 2,000 as well as the individual player penalties.
The only difficult part would be consistency from the judiciary!

Leon Pryce getting 10 minutes for a professional foul, or any player getting a sin binning for persistent offsides etc, is a fair punishment.
But getting a 1 match ban for these offences is completely ridiculous.
Saying they are pros and should know the rules is meaningless. Pros know the rules of offside, high tackles etc but still commit offences because these are unavoidable in a fast paced game like RL.

| I think a one match ban for a player who punches another to the ground and then repeatedly issues threats on live television and after being spoken to by the referee is eminently adequate and furthermore does nothing to put our game in a bad light.
Well done RFL and keep up the good work Keith.
