Could it also be the case that the cap referred to isnt maximum and that Hudge has lowered the cap internally? (i false cap if you like)

I think he'd refer to it as a playing budget rather than a cap in that case. I can easily imagine the heavy investment in the squad for the 2008 season, the replacement of James Webster with Dobson during that season, the International bonuses for Briscoe and Fox, improved terms for Welham etc will all have added up to a total close to the cap.
If the Clinton signing was being held up by cash rather than cap, why the talk of backloading the contract, unless a windfall is expected for 2011?

Fair point. I think Taylor cancels Esders, is a fair and simple way of representing it.
So savings of Gene, Aizue, Fozzard and Fitzhenry; new spending of Hodgson, Cook and Ratu, plus contract upgrades = £100k, I don't think is unrealistic.

| Some of the players currently in the last year of their deals are on contracts similar to that Clinton is getting ,i.e are on big money in their last year , hence the squeeze on the cap for 2010...
And bear in mind the overseas lads get more than just wages.....

So to clarify cos im a bit thick today, the HDM has checked with the RFL and you can backload a contract as long as the club never goes over the cap? I'm pretty sure Wigan were stopped from doing this a couple of years ago, maybe it was because they did go over the cap?

Weren't they trying to do it retrospectively or something? To be honest I'm not a fan of it as it opens up potential for abuse - although you pay for it somewhere along the line. I don't think anybody would argue with a young player getting incremental increases, but perhaps a wage should not be allowed to more than double over the life of a contract. Mind, it is a complicated enough system as it is.

IIRC Wigan renegotianted a a load of contracts part way through, shifting current payments into future years in order to be able to sign 10ish new players. Whereas Rovers are (apparently) structuring a new contract to fit the situation. Presume thats the difference.

i think the way Wigan did it was try to arrange some players to defer salary to the next year during the season to make cap room to sign Fielden etc, not pre contract which is the legal way to do it
As neils just put above

| Interseting that people on here refuse to believe the HDM, but believe some of Zod's and others rubbish.
If (big if) the HDM have got the story right, seems a lot to pay one player, one of his calibre anyway.
Also cant believe that Rovers would ahve signed him when they havent got enough room on the salary cap, what if they dont release a player, will anyone take Mills?
At lastly how bad is the Visa system, why does it take so long, it shouldnt take 6 weeks plus, I got a working Visa for Thailand in 30 minutes, needs t be sorted out.

| Comment by Paul Baxter on HDM website
Hi all,
To answer the questions.
We understand the deal to be over two years.
Good and trusted sources have told us that KR are believed to be splitting the money to fit the cap - entirely withing the rules say the RFL.
The delay with announcing him is to do with ensuring the club stays within the cap limit. The club won't comment on Clinton and have not done so for the past two months.
With regards to KR's finances, there is no obsession from us - we just reported what the accounts say.
It was the BBC who first reported the story of the accounts being filed late.
We then followed it up with the chairman who openly talked about the club losing £450,000 a year.
Then, as you would expect, we reported the accounts when they were supplied to Companies House .
We asked the club to comment on them before publication, offering full opportunity to put them into full context of the club's present position.
The club refused to comment at all, so we reported them factually - stating what the accounts said the club's position was, as of November 2008.
The accounts are available on the Companies House website for anybody to view and interpret.

| The RFL run a live salary cap so no club can break it. Maybe the HDM are unaware of this fact.

Any club can still break the salary cap, whether the cap is live or not. The reason for a live cap is so that any punishent can be ahnded down during the season in question, not the following year.

| This reply from Paul Baxter to a poster on the HDM website sums up the quality of journalism at the paper.
The club let us know Dobson wasn't happy with a headline which suggested he had said he would prove to be the best scrum-half in the city next season as he prepares to face Sean Long.
The headline was poor, as the actual context of his quotes was that he hoped to come out on top at the end of the season.
A genuine error by an over-excited sub-editor perhaps - so we apologised. Nothing more than that.

I dont think the RFL will allow a club to register a player if it puts that club over the cap limit.
