A shame to see Shannon go. He's done nothing wrong, in fact he was one of our better players in the first half of last season.

However Jamie Shaul is the future and too good to be out of the starting line up. This coupled with McDonnell's reported salary means it's probably the correct decision.

Another expensive one by the sounds of it.

Unlike many I don't profess to know any player salaries but the Mail says he is one of the top five earners, which sounds likely. If he is no longer a first choice and with concerns over his hamstring you can see why the club are making this move.

I'm sure he would be first choice if he was fully fit, probably still the best full back at the club but I can understand putting the faith in Shaul.

Suppose the club know more regarding his injury and how far off he is, if he is purely been released due to injury, then it must be a long term problem.

It looks pretty obvious FC want to use his salary on other players, not sure what he has left on his contract but if I was him, been released at this stage of the season, I would want hugely compensating!

It makes sense offloading McDonnell imo. Shaul is the future and can prove to be a game winner. Plus the fact we have Talanoa, Horne, Rankin and even Whiting who can play fullback all the a good standard. There is no real reason for Shannon to be here anymore.

I feel sorry for him. If he didn't get injured we certainly wouldn't be getting rid because he was one of our best players last year, but if we have doubts over his fitness and need his salary elsewhere then it is the right choice.

I just hope he gets a good gig somewhere else because he has plenty to offer imo.

Nasty injury and I said at the time he wouldn't be back for the start of this season. Unfortunate for him but it happens in sport. Right thing for Hull to do.

Would echo sentiments, have to feel sorry for him. I think releasing his wages in the cap with the talent we have in the full back position is a sensible decision - I do think they should have done this earlier in the close season though given Shannon maximum opportunity to find a new club.

Am I right in believing that as he hasn't played a competitive game this year, if he is paid off, it doesn't count towards the salary cap?

He's done nothing wrong, but at the same time it is pointless having him if he isn't going to get a game.

The mail said Willie Mason would be Rovers' biggest ever signing as well but there you go.

Thought this was coming Radford was always a big supporter of shaul so think he favoured him to be his starting full back and you might be freeing up cap space to sign carvell

Makes sense for Hull to get rid of McDonnell. Shaul is the future at full back so needs to be getting game time and you can't have one of your highest paid players kept on as back up, especially one with a possible injury problem. It's unfortunate that they have left it until now though, making it impossible for him to get another club before the start of the season. As a Rovers fan though, I don't really care about that.

The signs were that McD would be back for the start of the season, hence he was given the number 1 shirt, a week prior to Whitings testimonial Radders was saying he was hoping to give him a chance to prove his fitness against Fev, obviously he suffered a set back when he resumed full training, and looks like he is sidelined for some time. Good player who did well prior to his injury, although apparently overpaid.

My only slight concern now would be a dip in Shaul's form with the knowledge that he doesn't have McD competing with him for the FB jersey.

Tanaloa plays Fullback and when Biggs gets here their will be competition for places across the back line.

No brainer for me Shaul is the future and the money is needed to strengthen our pack.
its a shame as hes a good solid player but needs must.

I honestly believe that if given an extended run together Rankin and Miller could develop into a very good half back pairing.
