because he's so tall, and too fast for his own good, he's carrying a lot of weight around for the speed he runs at when he really gets going

| Some players just get em. Usually it's sprinter,fast, ripped up types who's bodies largely made of fast twitch muscle fibres. Slow twitch better for endurance/stamina endeavours. RL is sort of both so some players can be prone to it.
I know a super league player who takes stuff before a game to try offset them.

| lactic acid, when the ion buffers in your body cannot cope with the amount of lactic acid produced in the muscles it results in cramp. its not always easy to fix either as the cause isn't always the same, sometimes its a stress, like physical, lack of fitness, other times it can be diet. I think its potassium, or lack of that is often the culprit, often eating bananas or tomato's can help.

It's probably why he wears his socks down too, taping them up can cause problems with cramp late in games.
