| Terrible news and I wish everyone affected good luck in finding alternative employment.
I went through redundancy in 2008 and it's very tough.

| Why the big uproar?
Every other industry in Hull has probably been through it in the past 5 years, yet hasnt got a quarter of the press.
Got every sympathy with people losing there jobs but have the BAE staff etc cried wolf one time too many ? Seems every year this has happened at that site

| I feel for people in work or trying to get work this day and age .I was lucky in my working days there was plenty of work and you could change your job like changing a shirt .I now tell people I am glad my working days are over .It must be heartbreaking to be out of work and a family to keep ..Saying sorry doesn't help when you have bills to pay If anybody is out of work I hope you are lucky and get back into employment ..Best of luck , People who are 60/65 should be made to retire to make way for younger people to do that job .After 50 years or more of working that should be enough for anybody you have done your bit

| Its a body blow to the site, with a falling order book and defence spending shrinking world wide it was always going to be on the cards. The loss of the Nimrod MR4s, Harrier scapped, Tornado numbers reduction, Typhoon orders slashed and the new Lightning II cut backs is hitting the UK industry badly and I can not see any alternatives at the moment.
I presume most of these jobs in danger are in the design area and the production staff on the Hawk line will continue on the RAF order for the T2, its criminal waste as our defence industry is a big earner.

| Really tough on local people this, terrible news that the region and local families will find hard to overcome good luck to Smiggsy and everyone else effected, whoever you support which is pretty acedemic at times like this!

| Quite apart from the personal losses of those directly and indirectly involved, it is tragic that the nation may now lose so many skilled engineers, especially coming so quickly after Siemens lost the contract for the Thameslink trains.
But never mind, thay can always retrain and find jobs in The City, making money from other people's money, after all that's what Britain is good at. No dangers there, a massive industry that will always make us money and never cause the country any problems. Ditch the spanners lads and sit yourself at a terminal, that's where the real productivity lies.

| I was made redundant from Brough earlier in the year.My worries are they will drag this on and on again leaving the workers totally stressed out again.I was in the Fortunate position of already having an alternate career path to follow,so didn,t affect me as much as some of the guys.
Best of luck to all my former workmates and good luck.

having re-read my post it doesnt read like it was meant to, and like i said i have every sympathy with anyone who loses a job.
I meant to say have the BAE unions sold there staff short.
For as long as i can remember the threat of redundancies has been at that site on probably an annual basis, have they accepted the right sort of contracts or have they forced the government to give them deals just to keep the place going instead of securing the more lucrative contracts.
Given the decline in the industry and more reliance on modern technoloy and more up to date production methods then future job losses were always going to be a possibilty, i know of friends who are glad they got out when they could, yet others have hung on as they thought they had jobs for life in a very well paid industry.
Been in this situation 3 times in the last 5 years myself so i know what im talking about.

Nice curve-ball Hutchie.
It's the unions fault now is it?

I actually had a slight empathy with what you initially posted.
BAE does appear to have had a little exclusivity over the years.
Unemployment has been disasterous for fishermen, miners, steelworkers, and will no doubt be the same for BAE workers.

| gutted for all the workers, my husband was very fortunate to be offered early retirement 10 year ago, even though he was only 52. It was the best thing he ever did, he worked there for 30 years and the moral was very low at the time he went. It got worse over the years, a lot of the problem has always been bad management, they only find things from the media and newspapers which is not good. I still have family and friends there and feel really sorry for them all. Good luck to them.

| Gutted for everyone there, especially those on the shop floor. I was lucky enough to transfer to Typhoon maintenance during the last set of redundancies.
Sadly the writing has been on the wall for a long time, it was always a case of when rather than 'if'.
A very sad day though for a site with a lot of history.

It is all down to bad management. Bet they are regretting selling their stake in Airbus a few years ago and putting all their eggs in the military and arms basket. airbus and the main share holder EADS (franco German company) are now experiencing record orders and profits. Real shame for all involved. Always the regular Joe who bares the brunt.
