The only ones I'd have done differently are in red, i.e. not signed King, or given Radford a further extension, or signed Thorman.

IMO the Carvell feck-up and the late call to get rid of Dykes have hampered our recruitment big time, but can anyone seriously argue with the majority of decisions there? If we'd let Houghton, Briscoe or Washy go, for example, there would have been even more criticism than there already is.

Looking forward, as it stands I'd go for:

Burnett - 3 years
Lee - 2 years
Whiting - see how he goes after injury, but at least 1 year
Maloney - 2 years, although a bit early to tell
Thackray - 1 year

It was a stupid thing to say, since he had no chance of actually carrying it out. First sign of him being out of his depth IMO.

i think he needs toget rid of all the average players,which there is about 10of them and bring in about 7 quality players or we will be going round in circles.

Many of these are under contract so you can't just get rid unless there's interest from elsewhere.

Think we need to take a mid term view on this.
Due to the nature of the current squads contracts there will be no mass clearout come October. however, in my opinion we need a definate shift in our recruitment policy away from average jack-of-all-trade plodders and towards high quality specialised players.
This may take 3/4 years to achieve but I've long advocated the way forward is to have a high quality squad of 20 players with the club's much vaunted youth policy providing back-up when injuries strike.

Don't forget relegation is no longer an issue (one of the reasons for having a larger broad based squad) and at the top end of the table it's quality not quantity that makes the difference. If we continue with the current policy of signing the likes of Thorman, Calderwood, Reardon etc the best we can hope for is mid table anonymity.

This will not be a quick fix and some patience is going to be required, but anyone who has watched us this season must surely realise its time to go back to the drawing board and start afresh.
