It's on Thursday night at Goole Working Mens Club. Guest speakers include Malcolm Kennedy, (world cup winner in 1926) Chico Jackson and comedian Neil Hudgell. We're quite short on raffle prizes, so if you could bring a bottle of wine, toy, something like that, that'd be great. All proceeds will go towards a kit for the Scottish national team.'"

| Think this England side has a lot of blalnce and depth to be fair, we know we have the edge in the forrards and also now in the halfs, with that i cant see senior and gleeson letting us down so i think we have as good a chance as any
winner : England
runner up: Aus
3rd Tonga
4th : NZ
5th France
scotland and Ireland wont have either the depth or stamina to go 80 with any of the above im sad to say

Two NRL procedures will carry across to the World Cup, however. International rules do not provide for golden point time but it will be in force over the next month.
And the quick taps common in Super League will be outlawed, with all match officials required to be in position before play restarts from the 20m line.
my mistake . its played with international rules www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/s ... 12,00.html

England team more or less named.
news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_l ... 684947.stm
Seems pretty good and the best they could put out within the squad.
Just wish they had taken Diskin to start, with Roby on the bench, dont like it when they put players at hooker who arent hookers, which they look like they will be doing with Mcguire.

I would imagine that when McGuire comes on Burrow will go to hooker.
A good tactic in the hot conditions I reckon.

I still dont like it, his running from acting half will cause lots of problems, but he hasnt got good enough distribution skill from acting half to play hooker IMO.
It will work Ok against PNG, but worry when we play the Aussies or NZ.
Cant work out why they took Highan rather than Diskin.

Horses for courses.
I would imagine after 25 minutes or so when the heat and pace of the game is telling bringing on reinforcements in the shape of Morley and Maurie with Burrow scooting left, right and centre the Papuans may struggle to contain us.
Would have preferred Purdham and the bench opposed to Wilkin but other then that it is a strong side.

| I'm telling you. This year is different. Yes u r right about the NRL being overall better, no doubt but this year we've got the players. As long as they stay fit we'll beat the crap out of both the roos and kiwis. As for hooker just watch Newton and Roby, any aussie team would snap them up. Price at stand off, brilliant, burrows scrum half, forwards all top class, centres Gleeson/Yeaman/Senior. Full back Whelens, we will do the business.

With Wilkin on the bench that may well be so.
Speed of the ruck late in both halfs will be the killer either way though.

Not sure Diskins is International class tbh. I hope Hock does not throw some of his riduclous offloads in the wrong area of the pitch. Personally I would have started with Wilkin and used Hock off the bench.

I would have had JJB in for Hock and Hock on the bench for McGuire.

Based on the conversations earlier here about Burrow and Sinfield having spells at hooker are we not guilty of doing what has cost us in the past and taking the best players and shoe horning them all into one side? I remember when we had a team full of loose forwards so one played 9, one played 6 and one played centre. Doesnt mean it will work.
I dont rate Diskin that much but would rather we had hookers playing hooker.

| I wouldnt play Sinfield at hooker full stop but the subs bench indicates that he may well do that to accomodate Wilkin.
I also think that Burrows can be devastating from dummy half in an energy sapping game so like I say horses for courses. Would imagine Higham will play against the Oz and Kiwis though interchanging with Roby.

I dont think Diskin is outstanding, but his workrate alone would have seen him start if I picked the England team.
Newton would have been my first choice had he not been injured.
Like you I dont like playing people out of position.

The slight difference here is that Sinfield and Burrow do this for Leeds so its not entirely alien to them. Leeds only have Diskin (until Buderus comes in 09) so Sinfield and Burrow will easily be able to slot into a hooking role during the game.
Also look at Australia's side, Tate and Monaghan are not wingers but will still play very well in that position.

Thing is the Aussies can do it and get away with it. We generally cant imo.
And because Burrow and Sinfield have been forced to cover 9 for Leeds doesnt mean they should act as in that role for GB when there are other specialist hookers out there in the SL. Annoys me a little bit as im sure you gather!

My point is they will be doing a job that they do for their clubs most weeks so they might not be out and out hookers but it still enabled Leeds to win the GF
Imo the only hookers anywhere near good enough for Eng are Roby, Cunnungham and Newton. Possibly Higham and Diskin aswell. However KC is retired, Newton is injured and TS decided that Higham/Diskin were not required. There is no one else out there imo.
Also remember that TS worked with Burrow, Diskin, McGuire and Sinfield at Leeds and used to interchange them at hooker so he knows his players and their capabilities better than anyone else.
I did gather btw, I am debating with ''most argumentative poster of the year'' afterall
