What would you say to students who have just come out of University, with no money or job when they move back home, and are looking to use their degree productively?

Say they fall short of your 'x' number of years of paying into the tax system (you haven't said what you think 'x' should be, by the way). What if you thought 'x' should be two years, but they'd only paid in for one. Should they starve?

In case you haven't noticed, we're in the middle of a recession. It's not always possible for a person to just 'get a job'. Sometimes it might take someone 3 months, or 6 months to find employment. On top of actual living costs for that period, if a person has no income whatsoever how do you suppose they pay for stamps for job applications, travel to and from interviews, and clothing in which to attend an interview?

There are not enough jobs for everyone to be employed. Plus there are people who are genuinely unable to work through illness or disability. What do these people do?
You seem to think that the world is divided into people who have jobs and people who don't want them. This is simply not the case and never has been.

I don't know what it should be, but you shouldn't be able to just claim for things for free!!
Like savings policies or life insurance, you've got to make so many payments before you can withdraw or make a claim!!

I would also happily (though no doubt i won't be popular on here) scrap the NHS system which loses money hand over fist and go private. If people were forced to pay for private healthcare they wouldn't go to A&E for a stubbed toe or paper cut!!'"
As many people on here know in the last two years I've had two hip replacements and a knee replacement at £10,000 each where would I "forcibly" get £30,000 from, I get £91 a week Nobody would insure me either or if they did the premiums would be extortionate.

I've already gone over the disabled thing, but it needs to be policed properly, like 'proper disabilities'... If you need a walking stick to aid walking, then a desk/telephone job is fine. Too much excuses, i've always had a job. i'm only 29 and have been made redundant twice, unfortunately i like money too much and beleive that you work to get it... I've had plenty of jobs that i hate/wouldn't want to do since being 11/12 years of age but it puts money in my pocket and i buy the things i like....... I've been given nothing!!!

So you think people should have to pay in for 'x' number of years, but you don't know what you'd like that number of years to be? That's a little odd, don't you think?
Odd or not, would you be happy with the prospect of a person who has paid in for a year less than your magical number (once you've decided what it should be) starving to death because they have no money for food? Of course, they wouldn't starve to death, would they? No, they'd turn to crime to feed themselves. So we'd all be at greater risk of being mugged or burgled under your wonderful scheme. I can tell you've given it some thought.

And, as I pointed out before, those who are lucky enough to get a job might not get one for a month, 3 months or 6 months - how do they survive during that time and pay for the costs involved with looking for a job?

Absolutely spot on, and of course it pales in comparison to the amount of corporate tax avoidance that the Government turns a blind eye too!
The fact is if we hadn't have to bail out the banks we wouldn't be in this mess. Are we seeing the banks coughing up? Are we hell as like!

Fair enough, but that's where it needs to be controlled... The insurance should really be a set amount regardless (for example: How much is Bupa etc....??)
I have for example; have paid enough for your three operations with plenty to spare in N.I. contributions so i would think you wouldn't be far off either.
Another option would be to give the option to 'opt out' of the N.I. If you do then you take the chance and pay extortionate rate of care.
For example: My girlfriend and i went to Turkey a few years ago (my mum lived there) i have only ever taken the cheapest of insurance. My girlfriend simply cockled over and hurt her ankle and we needed to go to Hospital. Because it was nobody's fault, we weren't covered. She had an X-ray and was prescribed antibiotics. It cost £250 all in. But one thing was: The level of care, service, cleanliness and help was way better than this countries 'amazing' NHS system. It was then that made me think yes, i'd be happy to pay those amounts to get that level of care. But why should i pay for it, then pay again for private care???

| I had my two hip replacements at Spire Private Hospital through the NHS and my knee at Castle Hill. I can honestly say that the level of care at both hospitals was brilliant. The nurses and surgeons and all other staff are no more dedicated at an NHS hospital than they were at Spire. The only couple of differences I noticed were at Spire the TV and parking was free and I got two pairs of compression socks instead of the one pair at Castle Hill !

The insurance should be a set amount regardless? Really?
I can definitely see the insurance companies charging a young person without a day's ill health in his life the same as a 50-odd year old ex-smoker with respiratory illness. Unless you're suggesting that those who don't get ill should pay extra to subsidise those who do, are you?

NI contributions do not cover NHS funding.

And for those who are unable to pay for it? I suppose if they don't starve to death because they can't afford to feed themselves they could always die from a curable illness because they can't afford medical care.
