Defeats at Crusaders (and a lucky home victory in poor style) Salford, Wakey, Quins in Scotland.

Sorry I will give you that one. I just look at how they progressed this season and the reason why and feel envious. They to failed to get to the play offs last season and yet have done reasonably well. Whats their secret. Can anyone enlighten our board please.

i dont disagree with some of your points but we made the playoffs and lost. were your tagets to win 1 playoff game or 2 or the final?.
We tried to get a 6+7 on the park but cant controll injuries. To even look like coaching a new pairing well we tried again, berro, wash turner, tansy? tried a few variations (all unsucessfull but nevertheless tried) Im not sure how you think some defeats against teams you expect to win are poor, all teams lose games some they dont expect too.
I wouldnt agree that agar had done us proud either (i know u was mocking) i just dont think its the end of the world or as bad as people make out

They've had a lot of luck with injuries this year and pretty much have a star studded squad. Much better squad than us.

| Agar has improved the team over the last 12 months. We have been better but not good enough by a fair way yet. He struggles to motivate the team at times and for me lacks some imagination with selection. Having said that he knows far more about player's strengths and weaknesses than any of us on here and knows what they do in training and what they are and are not capable of.
He needs to employ a far more attacking style next year - last night we hardly had any second phase at all. Players need to be encouraged to push through the line more in support and do stuff more off the cuff. We need at least one more player who has a commanding kicking game preferably at half back and we need better quality cover in the backs. We lack a genuine strike threat apart from the excellent Tom Briscoe - maybe Will Sharp is the answer.
If we don't improve again next year as we have this, both in terms of style of play and league position, then I think Agar should be relieved of his position a year earlier than his contract expiry.

| If Hull teams had swapped coaches, I think Morgab would have lead Hull to victory. He knows how to play smart. We dont. They hit Long late again early in the game, and I dont think anyone laid a finger on Dobson all match. When they were 0-12 and the rain came it was always going to be uphill struggle.

I'd agree with all of that. I'd also add that our woeful wide defence MUST be fixed during the off season. If we can't slide then go to man-for-man marking. Anything to stop the bucketload of points we ship whenever a side move the ball wide.

| Quote ="DC W1"With the salary cap (providing all clubs adhere to it) a squad will always have "average" players. Its (should be) impossible to have 25 star men in a squad. The big question then is what do you achieve with the average players.
A good coach will turn the average into above average and the star men will thrive on them. The last time that actually happened with a Hull FC team was under Brian Smith. He managed to do it consistantly. Other coaches such as Kear have been able to do on the odd game. see the 2005 cup campaign.
With a proper salary cap it is vitally important we have a coach who does a Smithy.
Agar is not that man.
'"
That is the most salient point of the whole Agar debate.
As the salary cap restrictions take hold, so the position of coach becomes every more important. The teams who will succeed will be the ones with a head coach in place who can extricate the maximum out of his "squad" players to compliment the star signings.
This is one of the reasons for Warrington's success this past year. Tony Smith has managed to get the likes of Bridge, Hicks, Riley & Westwood playing at a higher level than they had previously shown. I just can't see Agar getting a similar return out of the likes of Tansey, Turner, Burnett etc.

| Not read any of the posts but my view of the season is that with the team we have we should of finished 4th without question, injuries to half backs didn't cost us, the defeats against salford and crusader's which we could say we were 'over confident' and just expected to turn up and win. Only the first game of the season showed a full good 80 minutes and its just not good enough if you want to finish in the top 4. We finished with 32 points, and a fact in the paper the other day said for the last 5 years that would of been good enough for a top 5 place finish, Imo that shows that were 2-3 years behind the likes of Saints, Wigan and Leeds. Defensively were not as good as we use to be a couple years back and our attacking 'style' in woeful. No attractive rugby played at all, and just goes to show by our points for and against for the season, the only team in the play-offs to finish with - points diff apart from newcomers crusaders. Alot needs to change next season, maybe not personel but tactics and how we play rugby because tactics shown this season are completely not effective. The 1st thing id start with is having a deeper line, which ive noticed we've never had all season!

| Quote ="carl_spackler"Right, Agar.
Pros:
1, Excellent recruitment (and dismissals) last year, and our one announced signing for next year is also a good one, so looks to have a good eye.
2, Seems to be introducing better discipline and demanding professionalism off the field.
Cons:
1, We are still a poor attacking side. When adding in that prior to being head coach he was supposedly our attacking coach, this looks very much like it can be laid at his door. We are at turns disorganised, disinterested, and/or stupid. We have far too few players with genuine rugby brains, a poor kicking game, and as soon as we come under any pressure revert straight back to one out rugby.
2, We have no flexibility in our approach to games. If things are not going our way we still don't/can't change anything and the game continues to drift away from us. This is a key area for winning a trophy, as all available have a knockout stage where we can't pin our hopes on fixing it for next time.
3, He continues to fail to address our obvious problems, despite accurately analysing them in interviews. Our wide defence has been abysmal all year. A good coach doesn't just spot things, he fixes them.
All in all, we've probably (just) shown enough improvement for him to start next season in the job. I simply can't see him being the man capable of turning us back into contenders, though. We are so far behind the top 4 in so many areas it is frightening, and I don't see many signs we can close the gap enough with our current tactics and setup. Next season, if we don't break into the top 4, make either the CC semis or 3rd week of the playoffs, and drastically improve the quality of our attack (which in all honesty is pretty much a necessity to do any of the previous), shake his hand, thank him for his contribution, and move on.'"
With Agar at the helm, I cannot see any optimism for next season.
I'd like to know how James Rule intends to sell season passes for next season
with allegedly no money on the salary cap available, nor quota slots available.
Other posters have alluded to Wigan who have strengthened, also Saints.
We will just continually fall further behind the top 3, and possibly overtaken,
Not good at all.

| Quote ="roamintherange"I regularly read post's with interest but very rarely post. I have read with interest the regular Agar out/in threads that seem to be posted weekly and have bounced backwards and forwards over the year as to what my real opinion of him as a coach (not a person) is. I have followed Hull since 1999 so I'm not as seasoned as some of the fans that post on here but I have experienced a few different coaching setups now and I can honestly say that throughout my time as a fan I have never enjoyed my rugby less. I no longer get excited in the build up to match days like I used to and have even found myself wondering whether I can even be bothered to go to certain games due the level of tripe we have become renowned for serving up.
I have found myself bemused at times by Agars tactics on the field, I cannot understand why in such a physical game as ours you would name players on the bench and then either not utilise them at all or save them until the last 10 mins of a game. I then find myself wondering why when players seem to play more than well enough to warrant inclusion in the following weeks team they are inexplicably dropped.
I support Hull FC and because of this have always wanted (and always will while he is still here) Agar to succeed however it is the style of rugby that is played under him that concerns me the most, I would rather lose 27 games a year and see us play like we did against Leeds than see us win 27 games like we did against the Crusaders as an example.
I was concerned that I might just be getting caught up in the Agar bashing and just using him as someone to blame so I did a bit of digging and came up with the following stats.
Agar has now had 3 full seasons in charge, he has played 81 League fixtures during that time. We have won 33 Lost 47 and Drawn 1, he has a 41% win ratio in the league. Of the 33 fixtures he has won 18 have been by a winning margin of 1-10 points 11 by 11-20 and 4 between 21-30 we have not won a game by 31 points of more in the 3 years he has been in charge =#FF0000(I didn't look at cup games). We have scored 1583 points and conceeded 1906 - a deficit of 323 points with an average of 19.5 points per game.
If you contrast Agars stats with those of 2004,05 & 06 we played 84 games in the league Won 54 Lost 26 and Drew 4, we had a 64% win ratio in the league. Of the 54 games we won 25 by a winning margin of 1-10 points, 15 by 11-20, 7 by 21-30 and 7 by 31 points or more. We scored a total of 2319 points and conceeded 1726 - a positive of 593 (916 points greater than Agars) and an average of 27.6 points per game.
I can't help but look at these and think it demonstrates we have some serious issues in the setup somewhere and you have got to look at the coaching setup as starting point surley. It is true that this season has been our best out of the three but our winning margins are still terrible having won 9 by 1-10 5 by 11-20 and just 2 by 21-30.
I'm not sure where the club go from here but unfortunately it's a clear Agar out for me I'm afraid.'"
Good Post mate.
I thought I would have a look at the cup games. Didn't take long as we were knocked out at the 1st time of asking during 2009 and 2010!
His record is P7, W4, L3. Points for 184, Points Against 161. Winning margins are 2 by 1-10 (against Bradford & Wakefield), 1 by 11-20 (Widnes) and I found the only game that we have won by more than 31 points during Agars tenure, we beat the mighty Rochdale Hornets by 37 points during the 2008 cup run!!
I agree entirely with what you say, the most disappointing thing during his tenure as coach has not been the number of defeats but the abject, dour rugby on display and complete lack of entertainment during the majority of the games.

Barista , what a load of rubbish , you finished 6th in the league, the table never lies !
In a one off derby game you are now saying Hull finished 7th.

Absolutely spot on.
As this is supposedly a debate about the suitability of Mr Agar as our head coach, I would like to know where some of the pro-agar people are (you know who you are). Where are you this afternoon. Why aren't you on here putting across your side of the argument? Because there is a large number of people on this forum who are really struggling to see any light at the end of the tunnel this afternoon.
You are just as much entitled to an opinion as the rest of us and no-one is going to kill you for it. I think an alternative viewpoint would be welcome to what is becoming a very one sided discussion.

| I find it very difficult, we play boring rugby and the style has not improved despite better results. I don't think Agar should have been given the chance to lead us this season after the dismal previous campaigns; however he was, and to finish 6th was a good improvement. Part of me thinks it wouldn't be fair to sack a man who has presided over such an improvement. But I don't think he has shown anything to suggest he can improve us to Top 4 standard, or even make watching FC an enjoyable experience rather than an act of faith and loyalty.
Agar out for me; if he is still here he needs to deliver a more attacking style and a top 6 finish again. If it's the same old boring drivel, I'll accept it if we finish in the top 2!

I would prefer a top coach who could also mentor Webster.
If no one else is yet available, then we won't do any worse with Webster in charge, and he would most probably do much better.
I wouldn't mind if the club gave him a years trial, and relegate Agar to assistant. If he don't like it, he can always leave.

Why comment when you clearly have not read my entire post. In order to help you I said this...... a complete inability to put to decent halves back to back. Example Saints at Home. Woeful first half and decent second. Yep I even critised that game.
As far as I am concerned one swallow and all that. We have so few highlights this season which for a top club is imo a disgrace. The season started and finished away at Saints as far as the highlights are concerned. That was the only game we played for a full 80. Short of major surgery to the squad and a complete change in playing style I will be forever in the Agar out camp.

| Its not only Agar look at the whole coaching setup not produced a forward from King to Houghton.
No the play is dure and only one plan ,as a coach does not seem to have any thing to offer,no backing up, no one running lines and to many favorites.
Also don't think the team is fit.
Thats just my opinion and the team do not seem up for it, if they had spirit of Don Robson ,Boxall,Wardle and co might at least play better .

You know a club is serious, only when they employ the right man at the top.
When I see a head coach brought in, who knows how to use his tools, rather then blame his tools, then I will begin to believe the club (or KH) is serious.

And I'd also be surprised if they didn't appreciate the link between success and things like lucrative sponsorship deals etc. When you add in things like the recent spending on youth development and the commitment to training facilities what it looks like to me is a BOD with an eye on the long term.

Fans want success NOW. I think the BOD are working on a longer time scale.'"

| I have tried very hard to see Richard Agar make the grade as a super league coach, he fails on several fronts. His team selections have me baffled, with hookers playing as centre's second rowers used as props and loose men used as battering rams. Our pack was totally dominated last night and not for the first time this season or last and next season is more of the same. Longy was flattened nearly every time he got the ball last night; he was missing any sort of half back partner. By that I do not mean Washy, he was lost form the moment he came on.
Some think our recruitment has been good, brilliant it may look in fact it has now been proven to be all wrong. The balance is all wrong and we have too many forwards who may or may not perform depending on how they feel or how the week went. We could have played for another four hours and still never scored we are clueless, easy for Mr Agar to blame it on sticking to the game plan. Game plans are ok but like battle plans they rarely work after contact with the enemy has been made and the team should on its own be able to adapt to changing patterns of play. Last night we lost Hall after a mere six minutes and I knew then I may as well have gone home and boy was I right.
The whole club needs an overall and quick because many that where there last night will not be buying passes or returning on a regular basis next season. For too long the faithful (and I use the word with reservations) have been promised the world and they have coughed up large amounts of cash for poor returns in recent years. They changes have to be NOW any delay will have a detrimental effect on this club for next season and beyond, anyone thinking different is in for a very nasty surprise this has gone on long enough.
I will now have a right go at the faithful, faithful.............. Spineless more like last night I sat in the South Stand and for a while I thought I was in a bloody mortuary. Not one chorus of the anthem was belted out a first for me at a derby. Many around tried to get it going may as well have started to chorus Red Red Robin because they outplayed us, out enthused us and out sung us on our own midden.
I have left the game before the end once in my life, Wembley 83 until last night and I went at the point Welly scored ( another FC reject by the way ). I was not disappointed or surprised by the result because I knew it was going to happen, it was kismet. I had something better to do in town then watch a bunch of overpaid, under performing journey men parading around after the match to accept the grateful applause from the fans for yet another season wasted. I was not alone, indeed the walkway to Argyle st was awash of black and white I thought it was Wembley (1983) away all over again. I am now kinda glad that by working Fridays I have and will continue to miss what is offered as Rugby league to FC fans, its not the game I know and its not the game I like and I am truly not going to spent money watching something I do no longer enjoy and I will not be alone. Last night was by far the worst night I have spent watching a game in my life, with possibly the Bradford play off match of 2005 coming a close second that one was caused by player power .
Rich will go
it’s not if, but when maybe some will miss the five drives and a poor kick I will not...........

| Quote ="The Chair Maker"With the players Hull have got you should be a top 4 side.
However the coaching at Hull is very dour.
You have some exciting backs but just dont know how to use them.
Good team have players running angles and switching play. All Hull seem to do is a few one out drives then when they get within the 20 zone swing it left or right.
Against an organised defence thats just easy to soak up.
Just look at the waste of talent that there has been at Hull.
Tommy Lee gone
Richard Horne from wonderkid to solid player
Craig Hall gone
some good points made, Hull have a very good side, but for need to bring in a top coach with new ideas. as much as i dont want to see another Aussie coach its what Hull need IMO
I think Briscoe will be the next. He will be turned into nothing more than a big solid winger, rather than a worldbeater that he should become.'"
