Exactly, maybe my opinions weren't great or widely accepted or even misinterpreted but they were just that.... opinions. Not government policies, not campaigns that i'll set up.. just opinions!! But you can't do much without being abused around here!!



Best bet is to pull out of it when people start taking things too seriously on RL fans forums, then take the hit when they say you've bailed out because you lost the argument (when you really just can't be d)

That's a rather simplistic view of an exceedingly complex issue. The world isn't black and white, it's shades of grey. People don't always have the absolute freedom of choice that you seem to think they have.

I'm all for people taking responsibility for their own actions, but you can't simply ignore mitigating factors.

If you have an opinion that someone thinks is blinkered and somewhat childish, then it's perfectly within the boundaries of acceptable debate for them to point it out. If you can't stand your opinions being challenged, don't post them on a public forum.

True, and he's entitled to that, what I didn't appreciate was how he'd asked for opinions and when mine didn't agree with his he had to end it on his terms as nonsense.

As usual on this message board what started out as a very good debate, started by Standee btw who asked for posters opinions on this government and what they would like to see happen which is exactly what I did has ended with everyone squaballing.

No where have I EVER said that and never would. Get off your high horse Standee, just because I perhaps don't come across as intelligent as you or have a well paid high flying society based job like you doesn't mean you are any better than me or anyone for that matter.

Far be it from me to jump to Standee's defence, but asking for opinions doesn't mean that he's not entitled to challenge those opinions. Or call them nonsense, for that matter.

It's descended into a 'squabble' because, rather than argue the point on its merits, you've decided to take offence to Standee saying he thought what you said was nonsense.

Edit to say I realise you have read the thread, but wouldn't you say something if someone said your opinion was nonsense? Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't but to belittle someone like that in a rather childish manner is wrong, all he had to say was he didn't agree and thats that, but hey, its Standee we're talking about!

I have read the thread. You need to read my last post (the one in which I said he was perfectly entitled to call YOUR opinion nonsense). If you disagree with him, tell us why it's not nonsense rather than playing the victim.

Have you not learned its not worth it was Standee? He will always win an argument and anything you ever say is wrong. I put my opinions across, a few times actually and as usual on here it was taken out of context, with Standee even saying at one point I have said that having a mental health disability is not as deserving as a physical disability when I have said nothing of the sort and would never ever in a million years say that and anyone on here who knows me personally will know that.

I'm not going off in a huff, just don't appreciate being treat like a 5 year old.

From the viewpoint of an impartial observer it looks like you've given an opinion, then been a little too quick to fly off the handle when it's been challenged. If there are flaws in Standees argument, highlight them. If you think he's putting words in your mouth get him to quote the relevant parts.

You seem like one of those people (like FC Wembley 0icon_cool.gif who are quick to bemoan what it's like 'on here' without giving any thought to your own contribution. If you expect to just give your opinions and have nobody debate their merits (or lack thereof), speak to your mum or your husband. But if you're going to post opinions like...

He didn't answer my question, I asked him what justifies a genuine reason to commit crime and I gave my opinion on what I thought was a genuine reason, so I'll ask you if you think my opinion should be challenged robustly, in your opinion what justifies a genuine reason to commit a crime?

And it wasn't because I was "challenged" it was the attitude that Standee always takes, instead of telling me why he thought it was nonsense and asked me why I thought that way, he just arrogantly told me HE was ending it.

I've added plenty. That you didn't understand any of it is hardly my fault. If you can't handle an adult conversation, don't post on topics like this.

There are a whole host of reasons. I mentioned drug addiction earlier and you dismissed it as 'a choice'. Well, on some occasions the first use of a particular drug might be a choice (and sometimes it might not), but after that it most certainly isn't. Once you are addicted to something like heroin, it's not just as easy as thinking 'I'll stop taking that now'. The supply of drug rehab programmes is woefully inadequate to meet the demand and we'd be much better served putting money into this than into simply building more prisons and locking addicts away for a few months at a time.

The other reason I mentioned is a person's upbringing. I've worked with children whose backgrounds mean that the only likely 'career' they will adopt is one of a petty criminal. It's all they've ever known. It's easy for you and I to sit there in judgement of these people, but until we address the social problems that lead to their offending, banging them up isn't going to make a lot of difference. Indeed, prison has been shown not to reduce the rate of offending and reoffending.
