| Quote ="Uncle Junior"Agree with most of that.
There's no doubt in my mind that there are a number of other coaches out there who could have given us far better results in the past two seasons, even the staunchest Agar backer would struggle to argue that had we appointed Foulkes at the time we appointed Agar we wouldn't have had better results.
It frustrates me that a lot of people would view getting a playoff spot of any kind this year as success, this way of thinking only comes about because Agar has set the bar so appallingly low in his tenure so far.
History will judge the first two and a half years of Agar's tenure, whether people like you and me are completely right in our thinking about the man or if it has been a painful but necessary period of overhaul and rebuilding in order to achieve long-term consistent success. One thing is for certain though, it will take a lot more than a (admittedly hugely impressive) comeback win over Saints to prove anything.
Even I wouldn't say we have to win (or even get to) the Grand Final in order for this season to be considered a success, finishing in the top six and winning at least two playoff games would be enough for me to review my opinion about Agar until the next season at least.'"
To be fair he couldn't do much fo his first half as he was stuck with the s**t players and the league season was over by then, we still got to wembley this year and wasn't far off beating Saints in that game.
The nest year, he couldnt do the recruitment as it was too late in his appointment to bring in his own players, also losing Crocker was a massive blow, omagine not having Fitz this year, we would have lost a couple more of games IMO.
This year his recrutment has been excellent, the best since I have been a Hull fan, he is the first coach to hightlight our main weak spots and bring in quality players to fill these gaps.
Without Long at times we have looked poor, but take out Sinfield, Brown, Orford, Dobson, Briers and O Loughlin and those teams would struggle in certain games.
Losing away to poor sides like Crusanders and Salford wasnt good but Agar and the team seem to have got this right since beating Les Cats and Cas, both quite comfy
There is no doubt that Agar has had issues with tactics, team selection and subs, but this has been slowly improving.
We are 4th in the league, despite putting in some poor perforamances (The players must take a lot of the reponsibility for these aswell as Agar).
Far play to Agar proving me wrong so far this year, long may it contiunue.
I top 6th finish and good account in the play offs will see my happy with Agar and the team, and with some basic recruiting for next season should see us improve next year.

| Quote ="EXPRO"No not at all Jake , just wondering if a top six finish would make you agree this year had been a sucess or not or are we as a club only sucessful if we win a trophy?? I know many believe it is our right above all other clubs to win something every year minus the squad building etc etc
Oh by the way with regards last nights match , here something for you to remind you of recent comments you made in your less than happy states ..
[uI'd also like to know where they expect to be at the end of his contract in playing terms and what we can expect in the intervening period.
agar is a poor coach. Anyone can see that.
but even when we've had a decent side out we've been poor most of the time
The only point he's proven is that he can scrape wins against the whipping boys, lose to mid table sides and cop hammerings when we play anyone decent.[/u
Hows that humble pie taste Jake??
Ps thats a bit of fun'"
There's no humble pie fodder in there mate. I'd stick by all of it. Thanfully saints were much further than full strenght than we were on Friday or the result may have been very different.
Do you think a comeback win with a late drop goal suddenly means we're a great side and agar is a great coach? They lost their last away game at salford FFS

| Quote ="knockersbumpMKII"Lets put it another way, if I had been given a better than average team & taken 2 years as a manager to bring them to hit rock bottom & thus failing miserably as a company & at the same time making constant errors & bemoaning the staff around me weren't ones I had employed as an excuse I would be laughed at by my chief exec/directors & told to go forth & multiply & pick my P45 up on the way out!
Whilst sport & team games in particular can be anomolous to this situation it is fair to say a better coach/man manager would have given us better results over the last 2 years. This in turn would have given us a much better playing platform to be successful.
Would I consider a play-off place a success? Actually no i wouldn't, an improvement on the previous years yes but not success.
Ultimately you are judged by your peers on the silverware you win, that is why we hate Leeds & Saints of recent times & Wigan before them.
Agar has had to learn the role of a SL coach of a big team(in terms of support at least) but having been under Kear & Sharpe I also doubt his ability to take himself & the club to another level.'"

Are you not content that we are 4th in the league and only 2 points behind 3rd spot??
considering we have had to get through a massive injury crisis again aswel, plus the fact we havent played many games with our first choice half backs and what we have had to deal with calders been out for so long, im very happy were we are and i think we can push on now and climb the table even higher.
tbh at the beginning of the season with the new squad we have and players we released id of said we should finish in the top 4,but then when you look back at the previous 2 seasons a top 8 finish would of been classed as a successful season in my opinion, the thing is with hull fans we want immediate success and it isnt going to happen.
also may i add to people who ask the question about what players have improved under agar, heres just a few,tom briscoe current international, richard whiting has improved massively, danny houghton who will be our 1st choice number 9 for many years to come, also we could see tansey pushing for international honours.
cant be that much of a bad coach can he.
but like ive said many times people are entitled to there opinions.

OR!!! Are we seeing a little more consistency from the coach of late? Some of the results have been terrible this season; Crusaders and Salford to name just two, but if you look at other teams such as Saints and also Leeds they've had their 'ups and downs' this season as well, all this with so called "quality coaches" I think sometimes we have to face up to the facts that the personnel we have on the pitch at times are not good enough.
Ask any level headed Hull Fc fan what we've needed over the last few years or more and they should reply, "Playmakers"
Playmakers that can control a game and importantly their own team. Imo we have too many headless chickens in our team (runners) and not enough players who can change a game or the even the direction of play instinctively.
Play makers are the energy of a team; directing, controlling and calling plays, vital plays like the last tackle. This is a simple area we’ve been guilty of ignoring in the recent past, and then you look at Friday night’s game where we scored off those plays and start to appreciate this ‘special’ type of player. I watched Longy call the shots on Friday, telling seasoned players like Fitzgibbon and O’Meley etc where to stand and run. If only he was 10 years younger.
Please don’t misconstrue this as pro Agar as he still has a lot to do to win me over in regards of his overall ability, but I will give him the respect he is long overdue for a fantastic win.

Could add Sam Moa to that list.
Jury is still out on Agar though and he has a long way to go to right some wrongs. I really hope he can but am still far from in the Pro-Agar camp.

Good post.
I said at the start of the season that I'd consider a top 8 finish excellent progress from the last two seasons and so far we're exceeding my expectations by some margin. I still think that Agar has areas of weakness as a coach but you can't argue with results and he deserves credit just as he gets flak when we fail.
I think we need to put the whole 'Agar out' issue to one side now. It's making this board a joke at times with people looking around for negatives even when we win. There is a difference between realism and unjustified negativity - far too many are unable to make this distinction.

I'd consider a 7th or 8th place finish an underachievement with the squad we have. We should expect to finish 6th, with anything higher a bonus.
As regards Agar, I mentioned on the other thread about mental toughness. In the not too distant mast we would have folded at 26-6 down and got absolutely stuffed. That we didn't must, at least in part, be down to Agar.

| If I may quote from Long`s book,
"Three clubs were after me,Wakefield,Huddersfield and Hull. But of the three Richard Agar the Hull gaffer was most on my wavelength."
Wigan also threw their hat in the ring.
My point is players ,who are the closest to Agar as far as tactics etc go,seem to be all for him as a coach.
As far as I am concerned I can take or leave Agar, but 4th in the table (at the mo) isn`t bad.I would have snatched it last season.
