| Tony Drury took his under 20`s to St Helens on Friday night to play a Saints team packed full of England internationals. I do not think you would have found many folk who would have given us a cat in hells chance of winning. Once again a Trinity team coached and guided by Drury wins. This got me thinking. We are are blessed with having a high profile, media friendly, very well regarded excellent first team coach. John Kears high profile is excellent for our club and who can doubt that he is the best coach for us, I am sure he loves the backs against the wall stuff.
So what happens at the end of this season. Every pundit, journo, RL fan tells us that in July we will be given the news that I think we all also expect, no SL for us. Can you honestly see John Kear accepting a job coaching us in NL1. I think he will take a media role or a role with the RL. I also think he will get a coaching job with a SL club when there is a vacancy.
So what do we do. My suggestion would be to offer the Head coach job to Tony Drury. He is the man who sourced the players that made up the Under 18`s championship winning team. He coached them, he has overseen their development. Under his guidance several of his team are now pushing into the first team most are doing very well in the under 20 team. Players like Wildie, Anakin, Slater, Walshaw, Spiers, Gibson, Trout, Davey, Morton and many others have been with Tony a while, he has added to the squad and his latest signing Liam Kay had a top game in the win over Saints. This group of players will I hope be encouraged to stay with us in NL 1 to become the backbone of the first team. The players know and respect Tony Drury, they know he is a winning coach. Tony Drury knows the players, he knows their strengths, he knows how to manage them and he knows how to make them win.
So if we are in NL 1 next season and John Kear decides to stay in SL then I say give the first team job to Tony Drury.

| JK was a guest at a recent Sky game. Eddie Hemmings asked him if he would still be at Wakey if we had lost our license. He said he had looked our new players, Stu Howarth, Tommy Lee, Paul Johnson in the eye and asked them to come and play for him at Wakey. He said he couldn't walk away after that. It depended if Andrew Glover and Jimmy Elston offered him a contract.

I saw that too - sounded good, but didn't ring true; if we get kicked out, he'll be off to Quins, Salford or some other under-achieving SL club that can't afford an Aussie coach. He'll also look some of those young players in the eye and ask them if they want to go with him.
Sad but true.

Yup, agree completely with you there - didn't stop him trying for jobs last year after, presumably, looking other players in the eye askin them to play for us.

| As far as I'm concerned, we have got 17 league games left, potentially a run in the cup, and a couple of months to wait until licenses, therefore, we need to concentrate on this, rather than guessing what may happen. At the moment, its all "its and buts" with no solid evidence, so why don't we all just wait and see. Kear is dedicated at the current time, as are the players and the chairman, so we need to get behind the team and stop winging about what could happen in 6 months time. Just remember, together we are stronger!

Not sure how much of that was him knowing more than us about our financial state and Ted.

| We go down John Kear will be too expensive for the club, coming up 5yrs in July same time we will learn our fate whether we stop up or not
TD could be the ideal candidate as he knows the structure and whos at the club
lets just see how things pan out over the next few months, there's one thing that JK is good at and that's getting the team up for the challenge

What, never miss a chance to post my opinion about rugby on a rugby forum?
Just got a bit fed up lately of the way the board is going, soon as anybody has a view that isn't all sweetness and like for the club they are shot down, look at the thread yesterday about Gareth Moor, couple of other clubs fans post a viewpiont and plenty here get all uppety and close ranks on them - I dont have a problem with this by the way, you dont want an opinion challenging then dont post it - but I am being a bit more vocal with my viewpoint lately as a result.
I agreed with what the other poster said by the way, its just that I dont agree that Kear is the right man for the job (and haven't for a long time) - as it happens though I think that his methods and style may be more than enough to bring a side in the lower division some on field success - he just gets found out at the top level.

You say the JK would be too expensive for the club but i am not so sure. I have no idea how much he earns and whether we could afford it in the championship but Featherstone can afford Darryl Powell so why wouldn't we be able to afford JK?

Reckon the much reduced salary cap would come in to play, particularly when you have a side dropping down to it from SL, Fev have presumably worked to a NL1 salary cap budget for the last 10 years so the whole wage structure will be geared round it from top to bottom at the club. Whilst I guess that all our contracts will be null and void should we go down it would be much more tricky to negotiate reductions for the players and coaching staff who already have "SL salaries" in place.

I don't think the salary cap applies to coaches/backroom staff, so as long as you have the money, you can offer whatever you want to whoever you want. Whether they accept is another matter.
