| Stanley Wildcats under 12's going to under 13's in september are now in the need of a level 2 qualified RL coach. The Wildcats are part of the Stanley Rangers Club, and have 18 players who have just gained promotion to the 2nd division of the yorkshire junior league.
The squad have many talented and dedicated players and parents, and the situation is critical if a coach is not found.
The team have been promoted from the 4th to the 3rd and now to the 2nd in consecutive seasons, and have proved that they are a fantastic side. The team however will fold if a coach is not found in the next 5 weeks, and at the moment the players and parents are very nervous about the situation.
This team made history when they became the first ever amateur side to be endorsed and sponsored by our side, and that alone IMHO is reason to fight to keep this side going.
I am making this appeal to anyone who feels that they have the time to give 2 week night training sessions, and a staurday morning. The rewards are massive and this team and parents will be both suportive and dedicated.
Stanley is situated in Wakefield, 3 miles from Castleford, and 5 miles from Leeds, and is easily accessible from the M62.
I would like any potential coaches, qualified or not to PM me ASAP, and i will supply you with the details you need,
regards

| Would it be worth contacting the club to see if any of the players who have the necessary coaching qualifications to see if they want to help.

| Think all this Coaching Qualification stuff is becoming stupid. The other day i helped out two former superleague academy coaches get their qualifications. They've been coaching for what 20 years at the highest level and they are being told they must pay to have an assesment to prove they can coach!

yes I fully agree with you, but the simple truth is that all sports want their coaches to coach in a specific style, and the only way to do this is to set a standard that is the same across the board, oh and to raise the 140 quid everytime you qualify and re asses.
The other reason is that they know who is coaching and that no potential Gary Glitter is hiding under the guise of Wayne Bennett.

It's the same in every walk of life now. You can have built the Taj Mahal, but you still need a ticket to say you brick lay these days. It's all about covering!

It's always difficult when a new(ish) policy comes in and it has to apply to the ones who are qualified by experience.....but I like the fact that they are making coaching harder from an academic point of view.
It's the same as being a teacher in a school. There are plenty of older teachers who are the best you can get and don't have a degree. If they had to reapply for their job they would be bottom of the list or pay for a course to 'catch up and prove they can teach'
......but by making the new teachers/coaches complete courses and achieve certain criteria, you bring the overall standard up.
I had to help a friend of mine with his coaching course recently too, but he's an ex player who is a new starter to coaching. I thought the course material was quite good, and if nothing else gives a professional impression of our national coaching setup.
Gone are the days in any career (or at least should be) when you can just be the longest serving guy and be the best.
In coaching terms, this is one area where Australia jumped ahead. They have intelligent academics taking up roles in rugby league rather than (excuse me if this sounds patronising) just ex players who are there because they were physically good at something. They fly off to find out what is going on in other sports, American Football being popular, and bring the learnings back to their own sport. Sports Science is a big part of our game now that wasn't heard of 20 years ago
Don't get me wrong, if our game was filled with geeks and boffins it would be worse, but there needs to be a balance.
Take the military as an example, bravery and physicality is the centre of what they do, but you would not have a very good army unless you had strategists and technical IT experts defining the game plan.
The days of Alex Murphy (who was a proven great player and coach) swearing and shouting in the dressing room (on tv!) may not be completely gone, but they are only a very small part of the coaching manual now.
Now I've previewed my post it sounds like a bit of a rant. Didn't mean it that way, just wanted to support the 'updating' of the approach to coaching. Think I need to go to the pub at lunch today!?

| Incidentally, before I go to the pub!, being a Stanley boy myself, I support the sentiment of the original post, even if I did go off at a tangent then.
Hope you get someone for the role.

qualifications is the way forward, for too long clubs have just got a get up and go dad who may have never played the game, this still happens but at least with a course they then have some incite to what should and shouldnt be done.
it is also fair to say that their are going to be a lot more courses for coaches in the near future regards child protection, more in depth crb checks, touchline managment courses to name but a few,imo its all in the bigger plan to take junior and youth rugby back under the rfl and the clubs and coaches that dont get qualified will be left behind.
good luck in the search for a new coach stanley is one of the good clubs with a fantastic reputation.

but in the same vane just because you pass your coaching papers it doesnt automatically make you a good coach ive seen many junior coaches who i wouldnt want to train my son because they are either crap or have the wrong temperment. something you cannot buy or coach is experiance.

agreed, also to point out is that just because you have played doesnt make a good coach either a combination of experiance and somebody willing to learn new tricks is a good combination.

agreed many times people who have played even top level, especially with kids never get that link that is vital to not only gain respect from the players but that trust, a coach is, a coach a confidant a second father figure and hero especially to some of the younger kids, and its here where ive seen so many coaches fall short, you have to give respect and show compassion, show trust but also have rules that both sides understand and stick to. there is the common link and there is where you start.....the rest is down to knowledge skill and the ability to adapt and accept self critisism.
imo if you can do that your onto a winner, you may never coach the best team in your respective age group or league but you will have respect up and beyond what many can imagine..

as a qualified coach myself if you've got the best intrest of improvin the kids at heart you wunt think twice about gettin your qualifications and cost should'nt come into it as most amatuer clubs like my own are willing to cover the costs
